I Love Saving Money!

Yippee!  Love to give cards for just about anything, but they can be super expensive.  Went to a yard sale yesterday and found two boxes of cards for all kinds of occasions.  Cost for both boxes - just a whopping $ .50!

We always need toilet paper, so when I saw that Food Lion had a sale, I pulled out my manufacturers coupon AND the store coupon to pay just $1.75 for a 9 pack.  Yay!

Next stop - Dollar General, where with coupons, I was able to snag deals on women and men's deodorant, soap and dish washing detergent for next to nothing!  Sadly, the store had been robbed last week, so they're changing their hours, but thank goodness everyone is ok.

My husband frequently asks why I feel the need to stock up on so many items that are already in the house.  I tell him we must be prepared in case World War Z happens or War of the Worlds, District 9 or the Day After Tomorrow, so we can have stuff for us and other people who need it.  Shaking his head as usual, he tells me, "uh..., I think we'll all be pretty much dead".  I, of course, insist that we'll still be around no matter what, with tons of toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant, and cereal to share with whoever is left.   "You watch way too many movies, babe".

Meanwhile, I found a few more bargains to check out later today while he's at work.  Shhh... he'll never know once they're stored away. (lol)

Hugs...

Volunteer

A great way to give back when you're low on cash is to volunteer your time or expertise to those in need.

If you enjoy working with the elderly and would like to visit, look for senior centers near you at www.eldercaredirectory.com.  Bring along the kids to make it a family adventure.

Spend some time in soup kitchens or in homeless shelters to help with meals throughout the day. This is also a fantastic opportunity to include the rest of the family.  To find shelters, check out www.nationalhomeless.org.

Another great site to visit for even more ideas is www.volunteermatch.org.

So many people need our help throughout the US, and volunteering YOU can make a difference.

WOW! What a Way to Pay it Forward

If you live in Oregon and are grocery shopping, you may get lucky!  Check out an article from Yahoo, earlier this morning.

By | Healthy Living on Yahoo.

The mystery surrounding a series of $100 bills recently tucked into items at grocery stores in Oregon has been solved. Turns out, the good deeds were the work of a Portland radio station trying to drum up publicity and spread some good fortune.

Despite speculation that the mystery donor was an unidentified local lottery winner, on Wednesday, The New 98.7 The Bull (KUPL) announced that it was responsible for mysterious windfalls occurring around Oregon and Southwest Washington — although no one from the station would specify which stores were included in the treasure hunt. "We are everywhere and encouraging others to pay it forward and do the same," the station's music director "B-Dub" wrote in an email to Yahoo Shine.

Over the past week, 12 shoppers at a Fred Meyer grocery store on Southeast Commercial Street in Salem were delighted to find $100 bills stuffed inside egg cartons, ice cream containers, and other random grocery items over the past few weeks. Walmart customers have also had similar experiences.

“We can confirm that there have been 12 different customers who have found $100 bills in our store. Upon finding the money, they’ve all alerted a store clerk and have been allowed to keep the money,” Melinda Merrill, the director of publicity at Kroger, the company that owns Fred Meyer, told Yahoo Shine. “It’s a wonderful thing.”

Rocky Road Relationship

A close friend of mine has been married for about 12 years, and to say it's been up and down is probably an understatement, but I've tried to be supportive.

Yesterday, she called me from Arizona in tears, making me frantic because we're separated by so many states.  Her husband has been getting late night calls, which he refuses to explain, and every morning he takes his phone into the bathroom between 7:15am - 8:15am for God knows what.  Well later that day, he asked her to call his phone to verify that it was working properly.  As the phone was ringing, she observed him doing something strange.  When she asked him what he was doing, he admitted that moving forward, to make outbound calls or to receive inbound calls, he had to go through the extra step of adding a code.

I admit that I was stumped, and didn't know what to say.  Initially, my thought was that I didn't know you could even do such a thing with a phone.  Then I thought that he had to be hiding something, particularly based on his previous behavior of getting mysterious calls in the middle of the night, but perhaps there was something I'm missing.  All I could do was calm her down and let her know everything was going to be fine.  Part of me wanted to tell her to get out of the relationship because he clearly doesn't respect her, but I didn't.  I tried to share a funny comment, but couldn't. Still, what is the right thing to do or say in a situation like this?  What could be really going on? Thoughts?

I CAN'T FIND THE REMOTE!

The other day I looked around and realized we have about 10 remotes sitting around the house. Three for the DVD Players, 2 for the Televisions, 1 for the VCR (yes, I still have one of those), 2 for the Dish, 1 for the CD Player, and 1 I have no idea what in the world it belongs with!

Do you remember the televisions that never even had a remote? If you wanted to change the channel, you had to get in a little aerobic activity by getting out of that chair and walking up to the television. Then when you got up there, you could rejoice in being able to turn that knob to 3-4 channels. When I was a kid, Truth or Consequences with Bob Barker and I Dream of Jeannie with Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman were my favorites!

Convenience is great, but if something goes wrong with one of those items, and the remote is missing in action, my husband believes the world has surely ended and gets really irritated if he actually has to get up. (lol)  He just can't understand why I still walk up to the television to cut it on manually. Hey...3 calories are 3 calories.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking about hiding all of the remotes... (lol)

STEP AWAY FROM THOSE BOOKS!

Once a month I go through my DVD shelves and bookcases to ensure they are dusted and where they're supposed to be alphabetically; so you can imagine my surprise when Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol with Tom Cruise mysteriously showed up next to Parker with my boyfriend, Jason Statham. When I asked my husband, he of course denied all knowledge, but since there are only two people in the house, I think we all know who was the guilty culprit. (lol)

Later that day, my husband graciously fixed a portion of one of the bookcases, (there are 7) which I truly appreciated, but when he decided to then rearrange the books on that shelf, which are painstakingly grouped by author and copyright , I dramatically gasped loudly, grabbed my heart, and knew I was surely ready to die from a near heart attack. He of course, knew the fastest way to save me from an early death, was to place those books right back in order, then to quickly move away from the bookcase.(lol)

Shayla Black has her own area, JR Ward is listed alphabetically, Cathryn Fox has her special location, along with David Baldacci, Jennifer Blake, Robin Kaye, Pamela Morsi, Brenda Novak, Sasha White, Sharon Sala, Delilah Devlin, CAtherine Anderson, Catherine Coulter, Sierra Cartwright,  Dan Brown, Melissa Schroeder, and a zillion others of my favorite authors.  There are even spaces for cookbooks, dictionaries, self-help books, etc.

Unless you're an avid book reader or collector, you probably have no idea how important it is to keep them in some type of order or the backlog can slowly get away from you, driving you bonkers.  I have an Ereader, but very rarely use it, preferring to have the novel right in front of me.  Yes there is an extensive load of books in a corner - I'm at over 192 right now, and while my husband feels I can never read everything that is piled up neatly in a corner (and continues to grow) in this lifetime, I know he's out of his mind.

Call me selfish, but I don't even loan out books or movies, because for some inexplicable reason, I NEVER get them back, forcing me to repurchase one of my treasures.  So don't waste your time asking for that hard to find book.  Sorry!

Meanwhile, stand back and away from my books and movies.  I don't want any trouble...

Hugs...

SOME LIKE IT HOT!!

Just about everything I eat has to have some type of heat, but all peppers are definitely not created equal. Here are just a few to add to your menu.

JALAPENO - adds heat ranging from mild to hot, with a back note of sweetness wich may be used for salsa and nachos, etc. Dried, red jalapenos are called chipotles.

SHISHITO - Wow, try to say this one fast, I dare you! (lol) This Japanese pepper is mild, but you may get a hot one every once in a while. Us this by frying in olive oil, sprinkling with a little seat salt, then serving with drinks.

POBLANO - This is a large pepper that's yummy when roasted and perfect for chiles rellenos. If it's dried, it becomes an ancho.

SERRANO - a little hotter than a jalapeno and works great with a guacamole dip. A red one has heat that's a little sweeter.

GREEN THAI - Whew! This Southeast Asian bird chile packs a whopping heat that you'll notice almost as soon as you put it in your mouth. Despite the fierce heat, it's an excellent anti-inflammatory.

RED THAI - This is the ripened form of the Green Thai chile, and the heat of this tricks you a little, perhaps catching you off guard as you get through your curry, noodle soup or other special dish. They are often harvested and sold together.

HABANERO - This, along with the Scotch bonnet is the most common chile in the Caribbean, and one of the world's hottest chiles. You'll find this mostly in jerk marinades and hot sauce.

CHERRY HOT - Serve this sweet & mild to moderately hot pepper, pickled and served as an antipasto, or slice it up for your submarine sandwich.

GREEN FINGER HOT - A staple of the Indian kitchen, this pepper is hot, but not searing hot, because it's actually considered a cooling spice. When eaten, it causes the body to perspire, and then cool down.

When handling hot peppers, it's best to use gloves. To decrease some of the heat, follow it up with a thick dairy product, like sour cream.

Easy FREE Stuff or Prizes

According to Sharon Elaine, the author of Ready, Click, Win!, these are some great ways to win unexpected prizes and gifts.

Every year in Raleigh, they hold a Women's Show that has all kinds of neat things to eat, and raffles for prizes.  Some of the food was absolutely amazing! If you have to pay, the goodies you get are well worth it, but believe it or not, some of these shows have no admission fee at all.  Sharon's tip, which I think is fantastic, is to take along address labels so you can stick it on the entry form, saving time, and making it easier to read.  You only need to write in your phone number and/or e-mail address.

You're already very happily married, but that doesn't mean you can't hang out at Bridal Shows for fun.  Get FREE samples, and take the time to fill in those entry forms for all kinds of neat prizes.  Her special tip? Get there super early so you can get FREE goodie bags, which run out fast.  If you want to find a bridal show near you, visit www.bridalshownearyou.com

According to statistics, mall visits are down, but if you do visit, your first stop should be Customer Service.  If you prefer department stores, check around the entrance for sweepstakes boxes.  Retailers are anxious to solicit your business. One of my favorite is right at the Customer Service Desk in Carlie C's, where they have stacks of entry forms for grocery shopping sprees.  If you don't see them, it doesn't hurt to ask.

You can't win, if you don't enter!

JUST A SPOONFUL...

You know how you get to the bottom of the mustard jar or container, and there's just a little bit left to irritate you? No need to rinse it out or throw it away, because you literally just need a spoonful for these quick recipes:

Yellow Mustard - Deviled Eggs
Mashed yolks of 6 hardboiled eggs + 1/4 cup sour cream + 1 Tbsp Yellow Mustard + 1/4 Tsp. Salt. Mix it all together, and spoon into the cooked whites for 12 servings.

Dijon Mustard - Fish Topping
1 Tbsp. Dijon Mustard + 2 Tbsp Mayo + 1 Tbsp Chopped Dill. Spread it all on 6 Flounders or Cod Fillets, then broil for 6 minutes.

Grainy Mustard - Salad Dressing
3 Tbsp Olive Oil + 1 1/2 Tbsp White Balsamic Vinegar + 1 Tbsp Grainy Mustard + 1/2 Tsp Grated Orange Peel. Toss it all with your salad mix and orange segments.

Honey Mustard - Cole Slaw
3 Tbsp. Honey Mustard + 2 Tbsp Rice Vinegar + 1/4 Tsp Salt & Pepepr; Toss it all with ready-made slaw mix, then add 1 mango.

Brown Mustard - Basting Grilled Pork Chops
2 Tbsp Brown Mustard + 2 Tbsp Brown Sugar + 1 Tbsp Bourbon

LIVE HAPPY WHEN YOU CAN

Sometimes there are simple ways to enjoy life and the things around you.  It just takes a little time and creativity.

Try a few when you get a chance:

1.  Choose 2 Days out of the month to play board games with your family or significant other.  I'm not nearly as awesome as my husband, but he beats my butt AT LEAST twice a month in Scrabble.  There's no need to spend a lot of money on games, either.  I've found many games in Thrift Stores and Yard Sales that are in perfect condition.

2.  MAKE a Birthday or Anniversary Card instead of buying one.  Find some greetings in books, on the Internet or even better, take the time to make up your own.  Not only does it make you smile, but the receiver will appreciate the personalization.

3.  This is rougher than it sounds, but will be well worth it!  Give just 10 minutes a day to your special someone, a child, your parents/grandparents, best friend or a cousin.  Even if you're just listening, your kindness will make someone happy and build important relationships.

INFOMERCIALS THAT I WISH WOULD GO AWAY

I'm very sympathetic to the fact that people want to sell items on television, and God bless the vendors.  What's really irritating is that I've recently realized that these infomercials actually take up valuable channel space where we could be watching lots of other neat stuff.

Today, I was channel surfing and was amazed at the amount of things I can buy over and over again.

Here's just a few:

Facelift Secrets
Shark Rotator Vacuum
Whiter Teeth at Home
Restore Thick, Beautiful Hair
Brazil Butt Lift
I Hate My Hair
NuWave Cooktop
Insantity Workout
Bra Buying Secrets
World's Best Blender
Breaking Bald

First of all, I had no clue that there was a secret to buying a bra, did you?  My butt is aleady pretty darn big, so I don't need a lift from Brazil or any other country for that matter.  The Insanity Workout is pretty neat, but people tell me I'm nuts already, so I'm not trying to add this DVD to my collection to make me any worse than I am.  Breaking Bald?  Enough said...

Either way, why are they repeated ALL day, EVERY day?  We need those channels for things like How to find Erotic Novels, or more cookbooks, or how to travel the country for free!

Is anyone listening to my cry of pain?

SPICY SWEET STICKY WINGS

About a week ago, I was waiting for a friend outside of a grocery store, reading a book.  A gentleman drove up in this HUGE white truck, got out quickly, grinned, and asked me to watch it.  Uh...ok. There was another lady near me who shared that he actually owned a car dealership nearby.

He came back out, proudly started his car while walking, then thanked me for watching it as he jumped into the driver's seat.  I saw him twice more after that, and each time he made the same comment, before starting the car in advance, jumping in and driving off.  In case you're reading this Mr. Truckman - I'm impressed that you can start your car from down the street, I promise! (lol)

On to my super simple recipe:

2 Pounds Chicken Wings
1/2 Cup Marmalade
2 Tablespoons Chili Sauce
1 Tablespoon Chicken Seasoning
Salt & Pepper to Taste

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees

Rinse chicken wings under cold water and pat dry with paper towels.  Season with salt and pepper, then place in an ovenproof baking dish.  Cover with foil and bake for 30-35 minutes or until the chicken is cooked through.

While chicken is baking, combine the marmalade, chili sauce and chicken seasoning in a mixing bowl.  When chicken is fully cooked, turn oven to broil.  Pour the sauce over chicken and make sure they are thoroughly coated.  Broil for 5 minutes, being careful not to burn the sauce.  Serve when ready.

Who Knew!

For the past 20+ years I've been thinking that Gidget was a movie that someone made up back in the 60's. Boy was I wrong! Imagine my surprise when I found out that this Girl Midget actually existed!

How did I find out, you may be wondering? If you guessed by watching Top Chef last night on Bravo, you'd be right. She's alive and well as a General Manager and Partner at a hugely popular fine dining restaurant in Malibu California right on the beach.

She says she told her dad all about her life as a surfer, including hanging out with Moondoggie, (yes, he's real, too) then he wrote about it, and his book was eventually made into a movie.

OBSERVATIONS: GUILTY PLEASURES

Do you know how you start channel surfing or pick up a book in the store and before you know it, you're totally hooked?

Well, I'm ashamed to admit it, but I've become totally enraptured with Total Divas on E! and Devious Maids on Lifetime.  I wait all week for Sunday to come so I can watch these shows, then go through withdrawal all over again, as I anticipate the following week.

Of course, my husband thinks I'm totally nuts, but to me, it's no different than him locking down the television for Monday Night Raw on Monday and Smackdown on Friday.  If someone calls in the middle of someone being thrown out of the ring or off of a ladder, he hits that pause button.  When I ask a question, "hold on a minute" I think he may be listening, but once I'm done chatting, he immediately rewinds to see what he's missed.  You think I would have gotten the message after 3 years, huh? (lol)

It's bad enough he has to put up with my obsession of cooking programs, but when he sees me taping my guilty pleasures on Sunday, he shakes his head, and says, "I don't get it", totally not understanding my preoccupation.  I think I have to agree, because I can't figure it out either.  Meanwhile, I'm going to keep watching until I find something else...

Hugs...

Street Team with Jennifer Blake

Many years ago, one of the authors I was hooked on was Jennifer Blake. In fact, she had a character named Ransom in one of her books that I was determined to name my son.  Unfortunately, my husband had other ideas and stopped me just short of signing the birth certificate. (lol)

Ms. Blake wrote her first book in the 70's, but I didn't actually catch on to any of her work until the mid 80's.  Her scenery was wonderfully descriptive, and the leading men, handsome, strong and charismatic, seducing me slowly, until I fell madly in love, over and over again.

Back then there was no e-mailing, so when she took the time to write me back with a personal letter answering all my questions, I couldn't wait to tell all my friends that I actually knew a published author!  More importantly, readers clearly meant something to her.  How neat is that?

Anyhoo, in the near future, Ms. Blake is working on a Street Team for her readers and will continue to provide updates in the coming months.  Stay tuned...

Meanwhile, read more about Jennifer Blake on her website at:  http://www.jenniferblake.com/index.cfm

Hugs...
