DO YOU JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER?

When looking for new books in the store, on-line or in the library, my initial reaction is to notice the title, then the cover.  After that, I'll check out the name of the author, the blurb and reviews.  I also pay attention to the reviews and opinions of other bloggers who specialize in a specific genre

Sometimes this process works well, but I've run across a few clunkers occasionally.

I've found that many books with less than desireable covers are actually fantastic reads, or sometimes the blurb may not convey the entire story.

Anywho, how do you choose your books?  Are you naturally drawn to the cover?  Have you ever run across a book that you enjoyed and it had no cover at all? Does it matter?

JUST ONE MORE THING
Here's a super simple recipe that will get you out that kitchen in minutes and your kids will love how it tastes.

Microwave a stack of frozen pancakes
Cook about 12 pieces of bacon
Put pieces of bacon in between the pancakes - 4 is a good number
Add your favorite syrup and breakfast is done!

You can modify this recipe by cooking pancakes and adding your choice of fruits or nuts in the batter.

Enjoy!

JUST ONE MORE THING
Recently, I've noticed a rash of Facebook Groups popping up that offer to help individuals with rent problems, clothing, food or utility bills. When people in dire need ask for assistance, there was literally NO response from anyone which surprised me.  There are people who are homeless or about to lose power due to the loss of their jobs, domestic violence, layoffs, or cuts in salary.  Many are embarrassed to seek help outside of their own circles yet gather the courage to do so. So, in my opinion, those who take the time and effort to create a page designated to help others...uh, should probably at least respond in some manner. Not doing so, just seems cruel or rude.  Or if their minds were changed about offering assistance, simply delete that page.

MEET STEPHANIE FARIS - A VERY COOL & CUTE CHILDREN'S AUTHOR

The really neat thing about blogging is that you get to connect with great people on a daily basis. Stephanie has this awesome blog where she brings up interesting and informative topics, then adds her brand of humor.  But guess what?  Not only does she have a blog, she's a bestselling author who writes these fantastic stories for kids in the middle school age range.  She just released the brand new cover for her new book to be released in 2016, so we get to check out the blurb AND find out a little bit more about Stephanie.  Yay!

Stephanie Faris knew she wanted to be an author from a very young age. In fact, her mother often told her to stop reading so much and go outside and play with the other kids. After graduating from Middle Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Science in broadcast journalism, she somehow found herself working in information technology. But she never stopped writing.

Stephanie is the Simon & Schuster author of 30 Days of No Gossip and 25 Roses, as well as the upcoming Piper Morgan series. When she isn’t crafting fiction, she writes for a variety of online websites on the topics of business, technology, and her favorite subject of all—fashion. She lives in Nashville with her husband, a sales executive.

You always knew you wanted to write, but what were you reading back in the day?

When I was a teen, I read everything Stephen King published. I also loved the teen romance novels that were popular in the mid-80s: First Love from Silhouette, the Cheerleaders series, and Sweet Dreams, among others. There were so many fun books for girls back then.

Stephen King is an awesome writer for sure, and I remember those teen romance stories, too! Both 30 Days of No Gossip and 25 Roses are stories about middle school. What made you write children's books and will you ever write novels geared toward adults?

I got my start in romance, but I always wrote fun, lighthearted stories. It’s interesting because when I started writing young adult, I wrote them the way I knew young adult growing up, which was also fun and lighthearted. I was immediately told my voice was better suited to middle grade. With Piper Morgan, I was inspired by reading Junie B. Jones books. I was amazed that I was actually laughing out loud at a book that was written for elementary school kids.

What does hubby think of your writing, and does he offer any feedback?

My husband is great at coming up with ideas and titles, so I love bouncing ideas off of him. Titles have always been especially difficult for me. Sometimes they come naturally, along with the idea, but often a title just doesn’t feel right.

That's awesome to have that support! Did you have anything to do with the covers of your novels?

They’ll usually ask me to describe my characters’ physical traits and provide any other details that need to be included on the cover.

Who is your writing inspiration?

My mom has always been my inspiration. I was lucky enough to inherit her good writing genes!

Kudos to mom! What guilty pleasure is in your fridge right now?

I found this yogurt that has Dove chocolate bits in it. Only 200 calories! I also love sugar free miniature Reese’s Cups. I can only find them at Target, so I’ll stock up every month or two!

One word - Yum! What would people be surprised to know about you?

That I worked in computer tech support for 13 years. You usually don’t see someone make the tradition from help desk worker to children’s book writer!

I'll bet those computer skills come in super handy! What's your pet peeve?

Rude people. There are so many instances where this applies, I couldn’t even begin to list them all, so it just applies everywhere: on the road, in the grocery store, and online, for sure!

Ditto on the rudeness thing.  Just not necessary at all. Speaking of pets, do you have any?

I have a seven-year-old King Charles Spaniel mix named Shelby. She’s sleeping on the chair next to me as I type this!

Way cool and hello King Charles! Do you have a favorite genre to read?

I love reading books for young girls, so I’m glad it’s my job. When chick lit was popular, I loved reading adult books, but so few books now are lighthearted and funny. By contrast, I also love reading murder mysteries.

I've been reading mysteries and suspense lately myself before going back to my all time fave genre of romance. Do people consider you an expert on kid topics when you go out and about? (lol)

Not at all. When most people hear I write children’s books, the first thing they generally do is determine whether or not their own children might be interested in reading them.

That makes sense. Tell us about your latest novel due to release in 2016.  Will you do anything special on release day?

I usually take a trip to the bookstore and snap a photo of it! I probably should make a whole ceremony out of it. Usually on release day, I’m smack dab in the middle of a blog tour, too, so it can be a crazy day.

LOL!  I can just imagine how hectic it can be, and we definitely appreciate the visit!  Hugs....

BOOK EXCERPT

When Piper Morgan has to move to a new town, she is sad to leave behind her friends, but excited for a new adventure. She is determined to have fun, be brave and find new friends.
And after learning her mom’s new job will be with the Big Top Circus, Piper can’t wait to learn all about life under the big top, see all the cool animals, and meet the Little Explorers, the other kids who travel with the show. She’s even more excited to learn that she gets to be a part of the Little Explorers and help them end each show with a routine to get the audience on their feet and dancing along!
But during Piper’s grand debut, her high kicks and pointed toes don't go quite as planned. After causing a dance disaster, she has to prove to everyone--especially queen of the Little Explorers, Lexie--that she belongs in the spotlight.

If you want to find out more about Stephanie, or her other two novels, be sure to visit either or all of the links listed below.  She enjoys interacting with other readers!

SOCIAL MEDIA SUNDAY, A SUMMER SALAD & STUFF

Before we get started, let's give a super shout out to my girl Kim of http://caffeinatedbookreviewer.com/ who lovingly does her weekly meme every Sunday about news, reviews, books and great info.  Hey there Kim!

No clue what I'm doing, so I had
to get a book. (lol)
Thanks to all that watering of everything out front, I've actually seen a watermelon in the garden!!!!  Can you believe it? That's the only thing I know about for sure, (lol) but I'm going with it.

Bookmark is courtesy of the very
cool Kelly Mc, who is
one of the kindest people I know.
I know a lot of people have already
read these back in 2013, but I'm giving them
a try because it's something different for her.
Sadly, I DNF 2 books that shall remain nameless at this time, but I did manage to find Daniel Silva's latest, The English Spy, that I'm really enjoying.  The legendary spy and assassin who just happens to be a world renowned painting restorer, does it again, and I'm all on board for the nail biting action.

As usual, I can't tell you what in the heck I did with the rest of my week because I don't remember. (lol) Oh did I forget to mention it was my birthday month? (lol)

The other day I was speaking with a young person about social media, and when I mentioned that I share my posts via Facebook, he told me that "only old people use that".  Huh?

It took me a long time to jump on board with Facebook at all, so I thought I was doing really well, dang it. Apparently I was wrong. Dead wrong.  According to him, I'm supposed to be hanging out on Twitter instead.  I have an account there, but the last time I actually wrote anything was at least 2 years ago, but occasionally, I'll receive a message that someone new is following me.  I'm sure this only happens because of my Twitter name, which is sort of interesting. *heh*

Statistically, he may be on to something...sort of.  There are about 1.25 billion active Facebook users on a monthly basis versus 215 million Twitter users, and  Google+ boasts about 361 million customers.  These are all pretty significant numbers as of 2013, and could be even higher.(Social Engine Journal).  Using all forms of Social Media, 18-29 year olds are at the top of the list with 89%, 50-60 year olds - 60%, and 43% for users 65+ years or older.

There's so many places for bloggers to post, that I'm sure I don't know even half of them.  Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Tsu, Tumblr, Myspace, (is that even still around?) and Google+ are the ones I've heard about.  How in the world can everyone keep up? What's the secret to staying in the know and connected, yet still maintaining your sanity whatever your age?

What about you?  Are you a member of several Social Media groups?  Do you have a strategy for how they're managed?  Do you sometimes pull your hair out? Is one more popular than another, and do you spend more time in one place?  Is Facebook really only for us elderly folks? (lol)

WATERMELON GOAT CHEESE SALAD
Since a watermelon is growing nicely, I thought it applicable to share this simple recipe. Do you have leftover watermelon and want to try something different?  Why not try it into a summer salad that's perfect for a get together, and the kids will love it!

INGREDIENTS
8 Cups Cubed Watermelon
4 Ounces Plain Goat Cheese, Crumbled
8 Small Basil Leaves, cut into small pieces, or use the kind in a container
2-3 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
1 Teaspoon Sugar

DIRECTIONS
Spread all the watermelon on a wide serving platter, then sprinkle with goat cheese and basil.

If you're doing in advance, cover with plastic wrap and place in the fridge to chill.  Right before serving, remove from the fridge, and separate into plates. Mix the sugar with the balsamic vinegar and stir well.  Drizzle over each plate of salad and serve.

If you want a sweeter taste, mix 1 cup of balsamic vinegar with 1/2 Cup Sugar and heat in a small pot.  Bring to a simmer over low heat until the sugar dissolves and gets syrupy.  Let it cool for about 10 minutes, then drizzle over the salad.

RENEGADE FAIR
All you do it yourselfers, foodies and crafty people unite for the 2015 Renegade and Craft Fair.  Celebrate with good food and community events, sponsored by Martha Stewart.

The event will be held in Brooklyn, NY from 11am - 6 pm at the Brooklyn Expo Center on September 12 + September 13.

If you're in Chicago, check out the festivities on September 19 + September 20 on Division Street from 11am - 6pm.

These events are FREE to attend, and will show up in various states up through December 2015.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
A very close friend of mine is going through a really rough time these days. Struggling in a verbally abusive marriage, coping with the loss of her job, gaining 50 pounds, and dealing with the threat of eviction from her home, she's not herself.  To make matters worse, when someone invited her to a new church, she looked through her closet realizing that all of  her glamorous clothing no longer fit.  Gathering her courage, she told her husband she just couldn't go because she had nothing to wear.  Yep, that sounds like a cliche and a copout. It wasn't.  Instead of hugging and helping my friend feel better as the tears started to fall, he yelled and told her "she needed to get her fat ass out and exercise instead of complaining". Then looking at her with disgust he left the room.  I offered my feedback, but I'm curious. If this happened to a friend, your sister, cousin or niece, how would you handle this situation?

OVEN-FRIED BUTTERMILK CHICKEN & OLD SCHOOL TELEVISION

If you love fried chicken without the headache and mess, this recipe is super simple to make.

Preheat the oven to 425 degrees, then coat a jelly roll pan with cooking spray.  Pour 1 1/2 cups buttermilk into a bowl.  In a separate bowl, combine 1 pkg dry corn muffin mix, 1/2 cup seasoned dry breadcrumbs, 3 Tbs chopped fresh cilantro, 1 1/2 Tsp Garlic Powder, 1 1/2 Tsp Onion Powder, 1 1/2 Tsp Salt, 1/4 Tsp Cayenne Powder.  Dip 4 Lbs Chicken parts into the buttermilk, then coat with the breadcrumb mixture. Place on the pan.  Spray chicken with cooking spray.

Bake for about 40 minutes or until the meat is no longer pink near bone.  Enjoy this recipe from Carla Hall!
