MIND GAMES & SOME OTHER STUFF

Every year I host a Veterans Yard Sale, and even though it's for a worthy cause, there are some crazy things that go on throughout the event that make it rough to keep the frown lines at bay.  Girls just wanna have fun!

So there were 9 tables of merchandise, and a lady stopped at the table with the hygiene items.  I turned my head for a second to answer a question, and when I turned back around  I noticed this lady switching the price tags on the Men's Schick Hydro 5 and the Barbasol 5Pk Twin Disposable Razors. Once finished shopping, she handed me her items, and I politely advised her of the total, and that I had seen her changing the prices.  There was denial of course, as she demanded I give her the cheaper price.  Never mind that almost all of the items were brand new and I was practically giving them away. I calmly stood my ground, and she ended up throwing them  back on the table, purchasing just 2 items.  As she and her husband were leaving, she called me the "b" word.

Fast forward 2 hours later and there were 9 razors left on that table priced at $1 each.  A customer picked them up intending to purchase them all.  The she told me she wanted to pay $1 total for all 9 of them, which I politely declined.  Ugh...(lol)  There's a lot more I could share, (lol), but overall it went pretty well.

WHAT'S IN A NAME
RO is a shortened version of my real name, so I decided to look up what it means.  Ironically, my real name and RO start off by saying I'm unique and a law unto myself which made me giggle with glee.  However, someone with my real name is supposedly tolerant and eager to help humanity, which I thought was kind of cool. But I should also mention that there is a tendency to procrastinate, and yes, that would be definitely be me.(lol)I hated my name as a kid and lived with another nickname that I changed because a close friend told me it was totally ridiculous.(lol)  Once I got older and used my real name, everyone pretty much butchered or mispronounced it, so I just shortened it.  Here are a few others:

Sophia - great wisdom
Philip - lover of horses
Adam - earth
Felix - happy

Phyllis - foliage
Sylvia - inhabiting the woods
Ursula - little bear
Vincent - Conqueror
Chandler - maker of candles
Elizabeth - oath of God
Anna - full of grace

SAVE TIME
The best time of the week to head out to grocery shop is Wednesday, but try to go before you head into work.  Going after can increase shopping time by 5-7 minutes.

SAVE MONEY
One of my fave hobbies is deal hunting, and you can find deals, coupons, promo codes and more at department stores, supermarkets, and online, just by visiting www.SundaySaver.com.

If you prefer paper coupons from the newspaper, check out this site which tells you which coupons are available along with the date.  https://www.sundaycouponinserts.com/coupon-preview/

If you want to score name brand merchandise sometimes as low as just $1, you've got to visit www.hollar.com.  You'll truly be amazed at how inexpensive most items are!

ELEPHANT LOVE
How many times have you seen Dumbo?  Do you collect any elephant figures? Did you know this beloved character has been around since 1941, and was Walt Disney's favorite from all of the films that were made.  Like all of our faves, it seems this classic is being remade and released as a LIVE Action Film in March 2019, starring Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, and Colin Farrell and directed by Tim Burton.

CHAMPIONSHIP
Do you play chess?  I could never figure it out, but 27 year-old Norwegian Magnus Carlsen, who has been the reigning champ since 2013, will defend his title once again from November 9 - 28 in London, England.  His net worth is a little over $8 million.

The 1st official championship began in 1886, but chess was played many years before that.  The most famous American to win was Bobby Fischer when he was 29 and kept the title from 1972 - 1975.

If you've been reading this blog, you may  have seen some posts about "gaslighting" which can be abusive tactic used in domestic violence.

The original movie, Gaslight was released in 1940 with Ingrid Bergman when her husband tried to make her go mad.

But for all the young people who may not have seen that one, a modern day version would be The Girl on the Train with Emily Blunt, released in 2016.  The movie didn't go over well with critics, but we have a chance to see how the nightmare really unfolds when this happens to someone.

Another extreme version was shown on an episode on Blue Bloods called Mind Games on 10/12/18.  Even though Danny(Donnie Wahlberg) arrested the culprit for shooting her husband, he has a feeling that something isn't right about their relationship.

Eventually the detectives find out that the husband has not only been cheating with another woman, but they gaslighted her to make her think she was crazy.  They even went so far as to drug the wife, then framing her for shooting her husband, (the mistress did the actual shooting while the wife was passed out) all with the intent of having her arrested so they could be together and to get her money.  Thank goodness the wife was finally cleared, but the husband and mistress were locked up.

This is not a made up term, and really does exist causing a person to experience a living hell.  It can also rear its head in many subtle ways or stages, eventually making you doubt your own sanity.

Seek help as safely and as promptly as you can if you're in an abusive relationship.  You deserve better.

From Psychology Today:

Gaslighting is a form of persistent manipulation and brainwashing that causes the victim to doubt her or himself, and ultimately lose her or his own sense of perception, identity, and self-worth. ...Gaslighting can occur in personal relationships, at the workplace, or over an entire society.

  1. Sigh on the self-entitled people who think the world should spin at their direction. Good on you for standing your ground.
And a bigger sigh at Gaslighting. It is I believe often the first and most insidious step down the abuse path.
    Hugs.

  2. I always enjoy reading the mix you put into your posts.

Can't say I've ever played chess, but do remember the name Bobby Fischer. You've told me something new in that there are Chess Championships in London next month … we may see some of it in our news!

Love the recipe you've shared, and that picture of fruit - so colourful.

  6. HaHa! Did you sell many Veterans at the sale...!!! :).
And..why do they call it a..Yard Sale..when the yard
is not for sale..! :). English words..wonderful things!

I have three names, my legal name, stage name and my
Sicilian name..but basically my first name is William,
    Willie..Meaning..
A Resolute Protector, for a long time after the Norman
Conquest in A.D. 1066 many English boys were given some
form of William the Conquer's name. The firstborn son of
Prince Charles is named William...Prince William..!

    And..Who does'nt love Dumbo..But, l'll give the remake
    a miss..'Hate Remakes'..never seen one yet that's better
than 'ANY' original..Waste of time and money..! :(.
    'Leave Dumbo Alone'..! :).
And speaking of Dumbo..l do have an elephant made out
of ebony..very heavy, quite big, it sits on the front
room floor facing the door, as ALL elephants should,
elephants must 'always' face the door..! I've had
this elephant some years now..worth a bit to..! :).

My advice on shopping..well as a professional shopper..
Shop when you want to..when it suits you..and when you've
    time..enjoy it..AND..shopping before work...NO! I don't
think so..it's worst time ever..! So, what's 5~7 minutes
    on yer life...!

Nearly nine in the morning over here..Suns up and quite
warm..bit of housework needs doing..so..l'm gonna get
out the J Edgar out and plug it in..and chase those
    bit's of dust around..HeHe! Bless! 🐾🐾🐾

    1. Gaslighting...reminds me of the film Rebecca..
Rebecca is a 1940 American romantic psychological
thriller film directed by Alfred Hitchcock.
It was Hitchcock's first American project, and his
first film under contract with producer David O. Selznick.
The film stars Laurence Olivier as the brooding, aristocratic
widower, Maxim de Winter and Joan Fontaine as the young woman
who becomes his second wife, with Judith Anderson and George
Sanders in supporting roles...The film won the 1940 Academy
Award for Best Picture...NOT TO BE MISSED...! :0).

I've only ever asked to get a deal on an item twice. Once at the Dollar Tree when one of their 2-pack of spiders only had one spider in it. The other time when Home Depot had a plant I'd been wanting for a while, but it was in rough shape and looked like it wasn't going to take much more abuse... and it was the only one they had. I would never walk up to a yard sale and pull that crap. $1 for a ton of items? Swapping prices to get things for cheaper? People low-balling you left and right? What's even more sad is that it wasn't for profit but for charity. :shakes head:

  23. Yard sales seem to bring out the worst in some people. [shakes head] I mean, I'll offer to bargain if I think something is priced higher than it should be (it happens) or than I'm willing to pay, but if they say no, I'll either say a polite "nevermind, thank you" or go ahead and pay the asking price. (Plus, I would never bargain at a charity fundraiser, because I know what the money is going toward.) I can't imagine pulling the kind of underhanded tactics that first lady pulled, or calling the seller names. That's just WRONG.

I hadn't read or seen The Girl on the Train, so I didn't realize there was gaslighting involved. You gave a very clear explanation of what it involves. I imagine it can be hard to spot when it's happening to you, at least in some cases. I'm so thankful that's not something I've experienced personally (as opposed to politically!), but I really feel for people in that situation, whether it's over big things or little things.

What was really interesting about Blue Bloods is that they actually call it out and use the term, making me do the happy dance. I hope someone noticed this while watching and it makes a difference in his or her life. Always love it when you stop by Lovely Lark! Hugs...RO

  24. Although I’m still not well, I apologize for taking so long to visit. I am just now making it out of bed.

You should definitely feel proud of your having a sale for Veterans. I stopped having yard sales when a lady wanted me to sell something I had marked at a quarter ($0.25) for a nickle ($0.05). It was then I got so frustrated, I packed everything in boxes and took them to the thrift store. I'm thrilled you stood your ground.

It's hard when you don't realize you are being gaslighted, especially where love is involved. Thanks for pointing that out to us, dear RO.

    1. Dear Elizabeth, I sure hope you are feeling much better today. I've been keeping you in prayer that things are back to normal for you. LOL! I've had that happen with the quarter several years ago when I was into the yard sale thing hardcore, so I definitely feel your pain. I've learned to be firm and calm thank goodness. What was really interesting to me is that on Blue Bloods they actually used the term, which I hadn't seen on prime time programs, and it really stood out for me. Every time I think of someone being cruel enough to do this to someone I get really angry and frustrated. How in the world does a person who does this sleep at night? Ugh!!! Feel better soon and sending some cyber hugs your way. RO

  25. It sounds like the 2 people trying to screw you into the ground at your Yard sale were 2 ebay resellers out to make a bargain! Glad you stood your ground.

I'd heard of the expression Gaslighting but didn't know what it meant, so thanks for that information.

    1. It just saddens me that people feel comfortable stooping to that level to get a bargain. The Gaslighting thing really makes me angry, frustrated and so sad for those who go through it. Hugs RO

  26. Oh man! I just did two garage sales in September and I host the Army Family Readiness group yard sales. I've seen and heard similar. People are something else at times.

Ah Dumbo was such a cute movie. I'm always wary of remakes not being as good as the orginals, but I'll give it a chance.

    Yum on the fall recipe.

Again, thanks so much for getting the word out about the abuse of gaslighting.

Ahhhh, neat knowing what your name means. And, there is mine, too. Lot to live up to, but I try. LOL

Have a wonderful Wednesday, Miss Human Helping Ro! (you do a good job of that, btw)

    1. Yay! That's very cool about the Army Family Readiness Group. I already know the work that went into those yard sales, and glad you made it out in one piece(lol) This remake definitely sounds different, but like Bewitched and mary Poppins, I'm all in for checking them all out. With my obsession with pop culture, I can't help myself(lol) Kudos on your name, and I think it absolutely suits you well! Happy Saturday and Hugs...RO

    1. I gotta have my coupons, but I agree, sometimes it can be a little tedious. I tend to shop at the same places too, so people are used to me asking about bargains. I'm working on my Planners today, working on a new recipe and of course catching up on repeats of Christmas programs on The Hallmark Channel all weekend.(lol) Happy Saturday and Hugs...RO

  29. Again, I applaud you and thank you for talking about gaslighting. It's real. I was there and looking back, I can't believe it. Both of us have worked hard on ourselves and are such different people now, but whew! I talk about gaslighting in my book, so, again, thank you for highlighting this topic.

Oh my goodness, what is the deal with people and good deals? I have a neighbor that goes up the our local corner store and plops change down on the counter for his coffee and expects them to take it no matter how much it is. It's not like he's elderly or special needs. He's just rude. Ugh!

    1. It truly saddens me how real this is, and how damaging to the human psyche. I'm so thrilled that it's a thing of the past in your life, and you're both so happy. That's a HUGE blessing! What was interesting is that they actually used the term on Blue Bloods which I hadn't seen previously, and it was good to see that they put it out there in the open. I love a good bargain, but there are just some things that shouldn't be done, like putting down any amount of change that may or may not be right for payment, or switching price tags at a dang yard sale(lol) Happy Saturday and Hugs...RO

My name is of course from the Bible and even though I was raised Southern Baptist my parents gave me a Hebrew which is just fine with me. I too hated my name as a kid but as an adult I like it. xo RO
(he name Deborah is a Hebrew baby name. In Hebrew the meaning of the name Deborah is: Bee. Deborah was the Biblical prophetess who summoned Barak to battle against an army of invaders. After the battle she wrote a victory song which is part of the Book of Judges.)

  32. Oh my goodness, I'm so sorry you had to deal with that lady! I hate it when guests try to get something for free or cheaper than what they SHOULD have paid - if others, including myself, have to pay the regular amount, what makes them any different? If there's nothing wrong with the item, that is. I'm glad the yard sale went pretty well though! Hopefully there will be less problems next time.

I can't use a nickname with my real name unfortunately, but with blogging, I at least can use a pen name, which has a nickname? Haha.

I used to play Chess in middle and high school - for fun in middle, and then competitively for a year in high school. Since I had a few years gap, I sucked in the tournaments, but slowly got better over the year. St. Louis is big on Chess I think, since we host the National Chess Championships here.

Oh, Dumbo...I just cannot watch that movie without falling apart! It's too cute and sad at the same time!!! I wonder what my name means lol...I make no secret that I legally changed my first and last names to distance myself from my family and the abusive past. Good for you, standing your ground at the sale! People are crazy! We have had 3 garage sales and I said to my mom, never again. We were selling this large plastic bags for a $1.00 a piece and only had 2 left. The guy picks up both, gives me a dollar and runs off. What am I suppose to do?
Thanks for the recipe! Looks so good!
