BE BRAVE IN 2014

This morning I saw a thought-provoking commercial from Bing on the accomplishments of several women in 2013, all of whom I recognized.  The ad ended simply with this phrase - "Be Brave in 2014".

As this year ends, I encourage you to remember the children who are being beaten, yet never heard, the women who are enslaved physically and emotionally by those who professed to love them, those people in your community who remained stoic in your presence, yet go to bed hungry every night, and finally, strangers on the street who have sought our help because they were homeless.  Be brave enough to make a difference in someone else's life.

Finally, if you've lost the beautiful person you are, and your heart is crying out in pain, 2014 is your year to make a change for you, by whatever means necessary.

In the words of Bing, "Be Brave in 2014"

Hugs...

ARE YOU BEING ABUSED?

You have done everything in your power to resolve any issues, yet the tirades continue, the verbal/physical abuse won't stop and you're at your wits end.  Even though it's not your fault, you feel nothing but failure, frustration and hopelessness, and your self-esteem is at an all-time low.

This cycle of behavior is what your abuser uses to keep controlling and manipulating you, making you feel as if you're about to lose your mind.

An impromptu poll was taken from victims of domestic violence, and 80 percent say it is worse to be emotionally abused, while 20 percent say it is worse to be physically abused.  However, that does not negate the danger and trauma of physical violence.  The broken bones, black eyes, and hospital visits are nightmares that no one should have to suffer.

Nor should you be called names, degraded, lied on or made to feel less than the wonderful person you are. Money should not be withheld, or family not allowed to visit in an attempt to control you.  This type of behavior is exhibited by a person who is insecure.

When you can safely, seek help by calling the national Domestic Violence Helpline at 800-799-7233.  They have counselors who can point you in the right direction.  Also, seek out a person you trust that has your best interests at heart.

You are beautiful and deserve the best!  Always, because LOVE SHOULD NEVER HURT.

Hugs...

MERRY CHRISTMAS..

If you celebrate the holidays, we wish you and your family the merriest Christmas ever!  But please keep in mind that abusive behavior is worse during this time of year for many families.  If you, or someone you know is being verbally or physically abused, please seek help when it is safe to do so.

You and your family deserve the best that life has to offer because Love should NEVER hurt.

Hugs...

WHISKEY POMEGRANATE COCKTAIL

Did you know this drink actually helps to fight the flu?  It's true. Pomegranates have a unique antioxidant called punicalagin that stops replication of the flu virus!

Even better - this is a great recipe to use for guests this Christmas that tastes absolutely yummy.

1.5 Oz Whiskey
1/4 oz. Green Chartreuse Liqueur
1/2 oz. Vermouth or dry white wine
1/2 oz. Pomegranate juice (Use POM)
1 TspSsugar
Sprig of Sage (Optional)

Combine the whiskey, green chartreuse, vermouth and pomegranate juice in a cocktail shaker.  Add sugar and shake well.  Strain into a glass filled with ice.  Garnish with sage, if desired, or lime.  You'll be the star at your party!

THIS CAN'T BE LOVE

I had a chance to talk the other day with a battered survivor.  Her many visits to the hospital suffering from repeated broken bones, frequent black eyes forcing her to wear makeup, and visions of the dark bruises hidden under long sleeve blouses when she went to work, brought tears to my eyes.  In addition to the physical proof of her pain, every day she was verbally and emotionally degraded, and made to feel less than the wonderful person I know her to be.

Sadly, her cries for help were ignored by her own family, as they demanded that she "deal with it". There were times when she lost all hope of survival. But she did. Despite the odds, she has been delivered from the nightmare, and has started a new life in the culinary field where she and her work are very much appreciated.  How I admire her strength, but more importantly, I'm glad she's alive to tell me her story.

Though we may never hear all of the details, 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. Domestic Violence includes abusive behavior that becomes progressively worse. (Emotional Abuse, Economic Abuse, or Intimidation.)

Domestic Violence most often occurs between the hours of 6pm to 6am.

Domestic Violence is the 3rd leading cause of homelessness among families.

South Carolina ranks #1 in cases of Domestic Violence and Louisiana is #2.

If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Domestic Hotline at 800-799-7233, where the phones are covered 24 hours a day.  If you live in NC, call the Domestic Violence Hotline at InterAct: 919-828-7740, and the Sexual Assault Hotline is 919-828-3005.

When you can safely, reach out to someone you trust, or call a crisis hotline.  We want to help you get a second chance at the life you deserve and are meant to have.

To save money and time, why not send free e-cards for Christmas this year?  www.punchbowl.com and www.egreetings.com .  If you still enjoy mailing Christmas cards to friends and families, go to www. postable.com and the website actually gets the addresses of all your contacts.  Wow!

Tired of carrying around paper coupons for your savings? Try using the aps: Retailmenot, Coupon Sherpa, or www.couponmountain.com

Alice Cooper, Dan Aykroyd, Spike Lee, Kevin Bacon, Jeff Bridges,  Martin Sheen, Billy Crystal, Rev. T.D. Jakes, Jerry Stiller, Andy Garcia, and Danny DeVito all have this in common.  If you guessed they are happily married to their first and only wives, you'd be correct.

Schwinn Sting Ray bikes - you remember the ones with the cool banana seats - may be worth as much as $1000 in good condition.

Your body burns the same amount of fat whether it's empty or full, but it's better to eat before exercising.

Yep, it's still true.  Drinking green tea 30 minutes before eating causes you to keep your metabolism revved up even you're inactive and you'll lose twice as much weight as those who don't.

Did you know that shopping on Thanksgiving is now called Brown Thursday? (lol)

Best channels to watch holiday family programming?  ABCFamily, UP Channel, Lifetime and the Hallmark Channel. Some are repeats from as far back as 2000, but a lot of the movies are new and really fun.  Every year I still watch How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Angel in the House, and  A Diva's Christmas Carol which drives my husband bonkers.(lol)  The new ones I enjoy are Let It Snow and Dear Secret Santa.

Try Egg Nog Ice Cream and mix with Egg Nog.  Try Vanilla Ice Cream and mix with Egg Nog.  Both give different flavors you're sure to enjoy.

YOUR SCAR MAY NOT BE VISIBLE...

The United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is an occasion for governments, international organizations and non-governmental organizations to raise public awareness of violence against women. It has been observed on November 25 since 1993. This is by far the largest effort by men across the world, working in partnership with women, to end men’s violence against women.

I have a close friend in Arizona, who has been married about 4 years. Let me premise this by saying that she is exceptionally intelligent, at one time holding a very high paying job in the corporate industry, has a sweet personality and is eager to help others.  Does she have faults? Absolutely, but we all do.  Since that time, her husband has cheated and when caught, told her she was making it up, was crazy and needed mental help.  He has lied on her to his family and friends ruining her reputation in a neighborhood she's lived in for over 12 years without incident.  He tells her she looks like a bulldog and is strong enough to lift a car.  He is easily angered, yelling for no reason, demeaning and degrading her character both publicly and privately, using profane words, assuring her it's all her fault that he speaks the way that he does.  He withholds funds after she's paid bills, telling her she doesn't have a real job and because of her he can't purchase things for himself. He says he can't stand her.  He has lied about so many things, that she can no longer really count on anything that he says.  She's tried to tell him she's afraid to talk to him, yet he minimizes her feelings by saying he doesn't hit her, so why is she afraid? Her clothing is dowdy, he won't introduce her to friends, and insists she do all the work around the house despite both of them working. When she's submissive he yells, when she tries to exhibit assertiveness, he loses his temper. Everything that's wrong is his life is her fault.  Make no mistake - this is Abuse.

To say that this man is absolutely gorgeous would be an understatement, and he is super handy around the house.  Add to that his fabulous sense of humor making most people feel immediately comfortable, and you have a real life romance novel hero . There are even some days, she says, when he is unbelievably kind, making her doubt her sanity; yet smoldering beneath the shiny exterior is a ticking time bomb waiting to explode.  She is still beautiful, has gained some weight due to her sadness,  grown reclusive and is now a shell of her former self. Why won't she leave, you ask?   Mostly she's afraid of being alone, no financial stability, not being accepted and believing that she doesn't deserve any better.  What hurts me is that I've been listening to this for a while and she is too far away for me to hug, and he won't allow her to visit.  I can remind her that she's not alone and help is available.  There is still hope.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, and many of you may be going through even worse situations.  If this is a day in your life, please know that it's not your fault.  Someone who loves you will not humiliate you and subject you to needless pain. These instances are examples of verbal and financial abuse designed to intimidate and manipulate, eventually effecting your self-esteem and emotional well being.

Please seek help or guidance when you safely can, and know that there are plenty of people in your corner wanting to offer assistance.  It doesn't matter what state or country you're in, I'm here to listen, cry with you, and hopefully provide valuable help. You are beautiful in every single way, and you deserve the best.  Please don't give up!

CONTROL & POWER

While in the abusive situation, it's very hard to see a particular pattern of behavior-but there is one.  This pattern is used by the abuser to initiate and maintain control.  Most people are aware of the physical abuse, which may be easily seen by others, but it is also paired with other types of abuse that  may not be as easily recognized and include:

INTIMIDATION - This tactic is used to make someone afraid with angry looks, behavior and gestures.  Perhaps things are thrown, doors kicked in, weapons are brandished, or the destruction of personal property.

PRIVILEGE - Treating you like a servant in your own home, acting as master of the home and not including you in major decisions.  Antagonistically defining roles of men and women.

ECONOMIC ABUSE - Unable to have your own money, or making you have to ask for money.  Keeping financial information secret, or stopping you from getting a job.

MINIMIZING, BLAMING AND DENYING - Frequently hurting you emotionally, then saying it's no big deal.  Not taking concerns seriously and denying the abuse ever occurred.  Making statements such as "you made me yell, you made me hit you, you did it to yourself", refusing to take accountability and frequent lies to or about you.

As difficult as it is to remember this right now, YOU ARE NOT AT FAULT.  No one deserves this type of physical or mental anguish, and Love Should Never Hurt.  When you can, and it's safe, seek help from a shelter, pastor, or someone you trust. There's still time to start your life over and to be loved for the wonderful person you are.

UNDERCOVER BOSS

Flashback to 2010, 2011 and 2012, then fast forward to 2015 and tell me if you notice something very familiar on Undercover Boss?  Maybe it's me, but if a new employee walks in with really bad hair and says he or she is auditioning for a reality show, or the chance to have his/her own store, something is up people.

The other day I talked to the manager at Family Dollar and she was really pissed off that her company was going to be featured on the show.  So pissed off, in fact, that she started cursing and saying if they ever showed up at her store, she'd sue!  Uh...I'm not really sure if that would work, considering the owners can sort of pop into their stores whenever they want, but I wisely kept my mouth shut with that feedback.  No way was I going to get yelled at! (lol) She then was irritated because she said the employees get no extra benefits and are not treated well, so if one of those people on the program got a trip or something, she was going to blow a gasket.  Uh...okay.  She finally ended the conversation by saying she wasn't going to even watch the "f***ing show.  Done with her rant, she provided my receipt and wished me a good day.  I couldn't make this stuff up guys, seriously.

The BIG question of the day, however - Is This Real?  Can everyone NOT know that something up?  Do people still behave badly when they know they're on camera and simply not care?  I'll still be watching because it's one of my guilty pleasures.

Personally, I love Undercover Boss because it gives a lot of insight into what goes on behind the scenes of companies like 7-11, Cinnabon, Hooters, Whitecastle, DHL, Retro Fitness, Rocket Fizz, Checkers, etc., and the lives of the employees.  Of course, it really bugs my husband that I cry at the end of every show when people are given such awesome gifts, but I'm touched and really happy at how their lives are changed in such a positive way.

THE DANGER OF VERBAL ABUSE

Verbal abuse is a pattern of behavior which interferes with positive emotional development, and over time can lead to significant loss of self-esteem, emotional well-being and physical state.  It is also described as an ongoing emotional environment designed by the abuser for purposes of control.

If you are expericing the types of behavior listed below, please know that you are not alone, and help may be just a phone call away.
  • Abuser blows up, yells or dominates you
  • Abuser makes derogatory comments about or discounts you and the things you have to say
  • Abuser calls you a liar, hypocrite, ugly, fat, etc.
  • Abuser blames you for his/her behavior
  • Abuser refuses to listen to you or share his/her feelings, or gives the siltent treatment
  • Abuser makes light of your work, your efforts, your interests or concerns
  • Abuser manipulates your words and thought process or causes you to submit to undesirable or illegal behavior
  • Abuser says that something did not occur and it definitely did.
Many people have no idea that verbal abuse is considered a form of domestic violence designed to oppress the victim.  If you are being subjected to this type of behavior, get in the mirror every day and keep telling yourself that it's not your fault.  No one deserves to be abused.  You are special.  You deserve to be appreciated and loved.

When you can, seek help.  Know that someone does care and wants to support you. I care...

DON'T BE AFRAID

"Nationally, approximately 60% of all shelter residents return to their abusers".  That's a high statistic, yet as I spoke to some strangers I met the other day about domestic abuse and/or violence, it shocked me to hear them ask questions like, "What would make them stay in a situation like that?"  "Women should have more sense than to put up with being beaten".

Sadly, it's almost 2014, and so many people still don't understand the vicious cycle of abuse.  Many are afraid, embarrassed, or feel as if what they're going through is deserved.  Some have no financial means to just pack up and leave.  Many have such low self-esteem caused by the abuser, that they simply feel as if they can't do any better.  Some women who are being emotionally beaten don't even recognize that they are also being abused., and deal with the name calling, character attacks, degradation and emotional bullying.

If  someone you know is being emotionally or physically abused, please offer help, rather then judgement.  This opens the door, so the person feels some level of comfort, and can take steps to move on. If you are being abused, call your local domestic violence organization, which will have tons of resources. Please remember: A kind word of support may even save someone's life.

IN THE KNOW WITH RO: ARE YOU BEING ABUSED?

ARE YOU BEING ABUSED?

Gary Chapman, quotes the following statement:
"You do not help an abusive spouse when you act as though the harsh words do not hurt you. The answer, however, is not to lash back, to retaliate with your own verbal abuse. The answer is to acknowledge that you have been wounded and need help. You need to remind your spouse that you are also human and that abusive words cut you deeply."

Have you been publicly humiliated, lied on so many believe it's all your fault, called profane names,  told you were ugly, fat or useless, or yelled at for no reason, over and over and over again, causing your self-esteem to be at an all time low?  Even if your significant other is not hitting you physically, and there are no marks on your body - yes, you are still being abused emotionally.  This type of abuser justifies the action by telling you and others that he/she isn't hitting you, so it's ok.

It doesn't matter if you've been in a relationship for a month or 15 years, or you're 17  or 57, this behavior does not exhibit a loving and caring relationship. It's not too late to live a life of enchantment and fulfillment, even if it means being alone, or your children have only one parent.

Of course, most of us would find it difficult to simply pack up and leave.  And you may be afraid to make it on your own, particularly if you have no income.  Maybe you'll wonder what people will say.  But if you take a moment to write down the pros and cons on a piece of paper, you may realize that for your own sanity and well-being, it's best to move on. This is even more true if there are children involved.

When you can, gather your courage and call someone at a domestic abuse shelter, or a pastor, who will talk to you about your feelings and the best course of action to take for you and/or your family.

Take that first step.  Eventually the smiles will come back, the tears will dry up, and you'll be able to walk proudly with your head up.  I believe in you, and remember - Love Should Never Hurt.

Hugs...

Love Should NEVER Hurt

Domestic violence can be delivered as a physical, emotional, verbal, sexual or psychological attack. In addition to these various fashions, acts of domestic violence can be initiated on both partners, meaning both the male and female of a relationship, and while the abuse of females is talked about more, men can also be abused both physically and emotionally.

Sadly, those who abuse emotionally justify their behavior to themselves and others by stating "they don't hit women, or they don't hit men".  But the abuse is no less real and is sometimes more lasting.

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, so if you know of someone who is being hurt emotionally or physically, don't remain silent.  There are many places in need of clothing, shoes, toys, makeup, books, watches and other household items.  Please take a moment to find a local shelter in your area, and make a donation, if you can.  Those who are being mistreated desperately need our help to start a new life filled with love and laughter.

Baked Flounder with Herb-Caper Butter

SUPER SIMPLE RECIPE

4 6-oz Flounder Fillets
Salt and Pepper
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
2 Tbsp Lemon Juice
1 Clove Garlic, minced
1 Tbsp Unsalted Butter
1 Tbsp Finely Chopped Tarragon
1 Tbsp Drained and Rinsed Capers

Preheat Oven to 450 degrees.  Lightly mist with cooking spray, a baking dish that's just large enough to hold the fish in a single layer.  Place in the dish and sprinkle with salt and pepper.  Whisk the olive oil, lemon juice and garlic in a small bowl, then ddrizzle over the fish.  Bake until the fish is cooked all the way through.

While the fish is cooking, melt butter in a small pan until foamy.  Stir in the tarragon and capers.  With a spatula, transfer the cooked fish to plates, spooning the butter sauce over the top.  Serve right away for a yummy meal.

CAN YOU REALLY WIN SWEEPSTAKES?

Very few people believe that I actually win prizes from entering sweepstakes, and those doubters keep motivating me every day!  I've won over $1500 in toys, gas cards, concert tickets, cash, make-up, gourmet candy and flowers.  No, I haven't won cars or trips, but that doesn't mean it's not right around the corner, destined to happen one day soon.

How do I win?  Mostly, consistency, but it can take time via the computer or by mail.  Even though I find lots of sweepstakes on my own, I have help from cool sites like www.sweetiessweeps.com, www.infinitesweeps.com, and www.sweepingamerica.com , and www.on-linesweepstakes.comto name a few.  They don't mind telling you how to find which contests to enter.

There are a few things to remember, however:

1)  Follow the rules!  People have no idea that they've disqualified themselves by entering a contest 5 times when the entry says ONE entry only.

2)  Take time to look through the coupons from the Sunday paper.  Not only will you save money on products, but you'll often find special contests that may not be published.

3)  When entering a store, take time to look for entry boxes at the door or near the register for sweepstakes.  If you don't see them, don't be afraid to ask.  Every time I go into Carlie C's I ask about their contest entry forms because they don't always keep them on the counter. Sometimes these sweepstakes are easier to win because people may not pay attention, and the prizes are smaller.

4)  The best time to enter sweepstakes?  November and December, because everyone is busy making holiday plans, and won't have as much time to enter.

5)  Only enter the sweepstakes you really want.  So if you know you can't get off work without lots of notice, it doesn't pay to win a trip you'll never use.  I love to read, so I do spend lots of time entering sweeps geared towards books.

5)  Finally - you can't ever win if you don't enter, so what are you waiting for?

So what are you waiting for?  Get ready, get set, GO!

I Love Saving Money!

Yippee!  Love to give cards for just about anything, but they can be super expensive.  Went to a yard sale yesterday and found two boxes of cards for all kinds of occasions.  Cost for both boxes - just a whopping $ .50!

We always need toilet paper, so when I saw that Food Lion had a sale, I pulled out my manufacturers coupon AND the store coupon to pay just $1.75 for a 9 pack.  Yay!

Next stop - Dollar General, where with coupons, I was able to snag deals on women and men's deodorant, soap and dish washing detergent for next to nothing!  Sadly, the store had been robbed last week, so they're changing their hours, but thank goodness everyone is ok.

My husband frequently asks why I feel the need to stock up on so many items that are already in the house.  I tell him we must be prepared in case World War Z happens or War of the Worlds, District 9 or the Day After Tomorrow, so we can have stuff for us and other people who need it.  Shaking his head as usual, he tells me, "uh..., I think we'll all be pretty much dead".  I, of course, insist that we'll still be around no matter what, with tons of toilet paper, shampoo, deodorant, and cereal to share with whoever is left.   "You watch way too many movies, babe".

Meanwhile, I found a few more bargains to check out later today while he's at work.  Shhh... he'll never know once they're stored away. (lol)

Hugs...

Volunteer

A great way to give back when you're low on cash is to volunteer your time or expertise to those in need.

If you enjoy working with the elderly and would like to visit, look for senior centers near you at www.eldercaredirectory.com.  Bring along the kids to make it a family adventure.

Spend some time in soup kitchens or in homeless shelters to help with meals throughout the day. This is also a fantastic opportunity to include the rest of the family.  To find shelters, check out www.nationalhomeless.org.

Another great site to visit for even more ideas is www.volunteermatch.org.

So many people need our help throughout the US, and volunteering YOU can make a difference.

WOW! What a Way to Pay it Forward

If you live in Oregon and are grocery shopping, you may get lucky!  Check out an article from Yahoo, earlier this morning.

By | Healthy Living on Yahoo.

The mystery surrounding a series of $100 bills recently tucked into items at grocery stores in Oregon has been solved. Turns out, the good deeds were the work of a Portland radio station trying to drum up publicity and spread some good fortune.

Despite speculation that the mystery donor was an unidentified local lottery winner, on Wednesday, The New 98.7 The Bull (KUPL) announced that it was responsible for mysterious windfalls occurring around Oregon and Southwest Washington — although no one from the station would specify which stores were included in the treasure hunt. "We are everywhere and encouraging others to pay it forward and do the same," the station's music director "B-Dub" wrote in an email to Yahoo Shine.

Over the past week, 12 shoppers at a Fred Meyer grocery store on Southeast Commercial Street in Salem were delighted to find $100 bills stuffed inside egg cartons, ice cream containers, and other random grocery items over the past few weeks. Walmart customers have also had similar experiences.

“We can confirm that there have been 12 different customers who have found $100 bills in our store. Upon finding the money, they’ve all alerted a store clerk and have been allowed to keep the money,” Melinda Merrill, the director of publicity at Kroger, the company that owns Fred Meyer, told Yahoo Shine. “It’s a wonderful thing.”

Rocky Road Relationship

A close friend of mine has been married for about 12 years, and to say it's been up and down is probably an understatement, but I've tried to be supportive.

Yesterday, she called me from Arizona in tears, making me frantic because we're separated by so many states.  Her husband has been getting late night calls, which he refuses to explain, and every morning he takes his phone into the bathroom between 7:15am - 8:15am for God knows what.  Well later that day, he asked her to call his phone to verify that it was working properly.  As the phone was ringing, she observed him doing something strange.  When she asked him what he was doing, he admitted that moving forward, to make outbound calls or to receive inbound calls, he had to go through the extra step of adding a code.

I admit that I was stumped, and didn't know what to say.  Initially, my thought was that I didn't know you could even do such a thing with a phone.  Then I thought that he had to be hiding something, particularly based on his previous behavior of getting mysterious calls in the middle of the night, but perhaps there was something I'm missing.  All I could do was calm her down and let her know everything was going to be fine.  Part of me wanted to tell her to get out of the relationship because he clearly doesn't respect her, but I didn't.  I tried to share a funny comment, but couldn't. Still, what is the right thing to do or say in a situation like this?  What could be really going on? Thoughts?

I CAN'T FIND THE REMOTE!

The other day I looked around and realized we have about 10 remotes sitting around the house. Three for the DVD Players, 2 for the Televisions, 1 for the VCR (yes, I still have one of those), 2 for the Dish, 1 for the CD Player, and 1 I have no idea what in the world it belongs with!

Do you remember the televisions that never even had a remote? If you wanted to change the channel, you had to get in a little aerobic activity by getting out of that chair and walking up to the television. Then when you got up there, you could rejoice in being able to turn that knob to 3-4 channels. When I was a kid, Truth or Consequences with Bob Barker and I Dream of Jeannie with Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman were my favorites!

Convenience is great, but if something goes wrong with one of those items, and the remote is missing in action, my husband believes the world has surely ended and gets really irritated if he actually has to get up. (lol)  He just can't understand why I still walk up to the television to cut it on manually. Hey...3 calories are 3 calories.

Meanwhile, I'm thinking about hiding all of the remotes... (lol)

STEP AWAY FROM THOSE BOOKS!

Once a month I go through my DVD shelves and bookcases to ensure they are dusted and where they're supposed to be alphabetically; so you can imagine my surprise when Mission Impossible - Ghost Protocol with Tom Cruise mysteriously showed up next to Parker with my boyfriend, Jason Statham. When I asked my husband, he of course denied all knowledge, but since there are only two people in the house, I think we all know who was the guilty culprit. (lol)

Later that day, my husband graciously fixed a portion of one of the bookcases, (there are 7) which I truly appreciated, but when he decided to then rearrange the books on that shelf, which are painstakingly grouped by author and copyright , I dramatically gasped loudly, grabbed my heart, and knew I was surely ready to die from a near heart attack. He of course, knew the fastest way to save me from an early death, was to place those books right back in order, then to quickly move away from the bookcase.(lol)

Shayla Black has her own area, JR Ward is listed alphabetically, Cathryn Fox has her special location, along with David Baldacci, Jennifer Blake, Robin Kaye, Pamela Morsi, Brenda Novak, Sasha White, Sharon Sala, Delilah Devlin, CAtherine Anderson, Catherine Coulter, Sierra Cartwright,  Dan Brown, Melissa Schroeder, and a zillion others of my favorite authors.  There are even spaces for cookbooks, dictionaries, self-help books, etc.

Unless you're an avid book reader or collector, you probably have no idea how important it is to keep them in some type of order or the backlog can slowly get away from you, driving you bonkers.  I have an Ereader, but very rarely use it, preferring to have the novel right in front of me.  Yes there is an extensive load of books in a corner - I'm at over 192 right now, and while my husband feels I can never read everything that is piled up neatly in a corner (and continues to grow) in this lifetime, I know he's out of his mind.

Call me selfish, but I don't even loan out books or movies, because for some inexplicable reason, I NEVER get them back, forcing me to repurchase one of my treasures.  So don't waste your time asking for that hard to find book.  Sorry!

Meanwhile, stand back and away from my books and movies.  I don't want any trouble...

Hugs...

SOME LIKE IT HOT!!

Just about everything I eat has to have some type of heat, but all peppers are definitely not created equal. Here are just a few to add to your menu.

JALAPENO - adds heat ranging from mild to hot, with a back note of sweetness wich may be used for salsa and nachos, etc. Dried, red jalapenos are called chipotles.

SHISHITO - Wow, try to say this one fast, I dare you! (lol) This Japanese pepper is mild, but you may get a hot one every once in a while. Us this by frying in olive oil, sprinkling with a little seat salt, then serving with drinks.

POBLANO - This is a large pepper that's yummy when roasted and perfect for chiles rellenos. If it's dried, it becomes an ancho.

SERRANO - a little hotter than a jalapeno and works great with a guacamole dip. A red one has heat that's a little sweeter.

GREEN THAI - Whew! This Southeast Asian bird chile packs a whopping heat that you'll notice almost as soon as you put it in your mouth. Despite the fierce heat, it's an excellent anti-inflammatory.

RED THAI - This is the ripened form of the Green Thai chile, and the heat of this tricks you a little, perhaps catching you off guard as you get through your curry, noodle soup or other special dish. They are often harvested and sold together.

HABANERO - This, along with the Scotch bonnet is the most common chile in the Caribbean, and one of the world's hottest chiles. You'll find this mostly in jerk marinades and hot sauce.

CHERRY HOT - Serve this sweet & mild to moderately hot pepper, pickled and served as an antipasto, or slice it up for your submarine sandwich.

GREEN FINGER HOT - A staple of the Indian kitchen, this pepper is hot, but not searing hot, because it's actually considered a cooling spice. When eaten, it causes the body to perspire, and then cool down.

When handling hot peppers, it's best to use gloves. To decrease some of the heat, follow it up with a thick dairy product, like sour cream.

Easy FREE Stuff or Prizes

According to Sharon Elaine, the author of Ready, Click, Win!, these are some great ways to win unexpected prizes and gifts.

Every year in Raleigh, they hold a Women's Show that has all kinds of neat things to eat, and raffles for prizes.  Some of the food was absolutely amazing! If you have to pay, the goodies you get are well worth it, but believe it or not, some of these shows have no admission fee at all.  Sharon's tip, which I think is fantastic, is to take along address labels so you can stick it on the entry form, saving time, and making it easier to read.  You only need to write in your phone number and/or e-mail address.

You're already very happily married, but that doesn't mean you can't hang out at Bridal Shows for fun.  Get FREE samples, and take the time to fill in those entry forms for all kinds of neat prizes.  Her special tip? Get there super early so you can get FREE goodie bags, which run out fast.  If you want to find a bridal show near you, visit www.bridalshownearyou.com

According to statistics, mall visits are down, but if you do visit, your first stop should be Customer Service.  If you prefer department stores, check around the entrance for sweepstakes boxes.  Retailers are anxious to solicit your business. One of my favorite is right at the Customer Service Desk in Carlie C's, where they have stacks of entry forms for grocery shopping sprees.  If you don't see them, it doesn't hurt to ask.

You can't win, if you don't enter!
