DOES SIZE REALLY MATTER?

Bet that grabbed your attention, huh? We gravitate toward the curtain instead of the small box on Let's Make A Deal. On Christmas Day, we pick up the biggest gift under the tree.
Women enjoy looking up into the eyes of a tall man, and tall men love looking down on shorter women.
In fact, it wasn't that long ago, that we wanted the tiniest phones available to entertain ourselves. Now it's exactly the opposite.

Some prefer curvy cuties, and others are attracted to muscular men. Many like tiny women, and some prefer shorter men.  We may eat a lot of chocolate, or just a tiny bit. Some like Chihuahuas, while plenty like Great Danes.

When it comes to reading a novel, I find that the length and size are important,  preferring to read a book that's a little longer, giving the story some time to unfold at a leisurely pace.

But that doesn't mean a book that's 200 pages or less can't be fulfilling.   Many authors know how to grab our attention right away, providing unforgettable quotes, superbly crafted tales, heart stopping romance or fast paced thrillers, even if there aren't many pages to read.

We all have the power of choice, and we like what we like. Hopefully our preferences still allow us to be kind and tolerant to others who feel differently.

But what about you?  Do you prefer to read a larger novel, or are you okay with a quick anthology?  Does size matter to you?

  1. Those doggies and kitties are adorable. Lately, I've been reading mostly anthologies and novellas. Since they're shorter, I'm able to read more stories and become familiar with more authors! Thanks for the post, RO.

    1. I love those pics, too! So fun. You can definitely find more writers that way, for sure. I used to read tons of anthologies, but it's definitely been a while. Hugs.

  2. it would depend on the situation and what my mood is at the time and the same goes with books - long or short doesn't matter if I like reading it.

it's those book series that drives me nuts, it's not that I don't like them, it's just that, how long can a series be? and why is every book out a series? sometimes I just want to read a book and not have to wait for the next one and not have to think about cliffhangers or get mad that they elongated a story that should have been shorter. but then again, a series is like a very long book divided in parts, so I guess my complaint is not quite valid. but then again, it's a matter of opinion anyway. and also whether I have patience for it.

    anyway, have a wonderful day.

    1. Yes totally understand what you mean. I got hooked on JR Ward's books and seriously went into withdrawal waiting for the next book to come out. (lol) But lately, the series I've been reading are thrillers focused on one certain character, so it ends successfully, then you're just ready for the next adventure. Hugs...

  3. When I was younger and on a tight book budget, I would choose books with the most pages..LOL

    1. That makes a lot of sense. Why didn't I think of that back then. I think I can still use that theory, Kim. (lol)

  4. That's a good questions and while I've read quite a few 00 page books that were great. The best books I've read were 600 and 800 pages long. Something like Styxx and Acheron. Both books were incredible.

    1. I know right? Sometimes a story is so good you just don't want it to end! Hugs...

  5. I've found now that I read books on my Kindle, I don't pay nearly as much attention to their size anymore. I don't even know how many pages they are until I start turning pages and see that it takes FOREVER to get past one percent!

    1. I know I'm in the minority because lots more people are reading books on their computers now and it's easier and less expensive. I still like to carry a book around with me, but I imagine in the next 10 years, we may not even have actual books. (lol)

  6. I tend to stick in the 350ish range for books. I read longer ones and shorter ones but probably 80% are right in that 350-400 range. But really doesn't matter to me as long as the author can pull me in and the price is right :)

    1. That's a pretty good range for me, too. I have read some shorter ones - mostly motivational or informational lately that are cool. I used to read and review a ton of anthologies but have not done so in a while. Hugs...

  7. I think reading a shorter story is easier for me if it's part of a universe I'm already familiar with, featuring characters I have already 'met'. It's very seldom that I feel completely satisfied with a very short story, say around 100 pages, because most of the time that just isn't enough for me to get attached to the characters. And I have realized that getting to know the characters is a big part of my enjoyment of a book.
Great post, Ro, and I love the puppy pictures.

  8. Happy 2016, Ro!

Shorties are tricky, I usually skip in between novellas unless it's connected to the series arc. It's hard getting it all in in such a short story. That's why I skip anthologies too lol

    1. Lately, I save the smaller novels for motivational or devotional tips, or reference. It's gotten to the point, that if the book looks too small, I'll pass it by. Yikes!
