One thing I did as a kid all the time was to read, read, read. But I also had a horrible habit of folding back the corners of the pages to keep my place in the book. I can't tell you how many novels I probably ruined.
It wasn't until I was an adult and other readers threatened to murder me that I started using bookmarks or other pieces of paper, and now when I see a dog-eared page I cringe.

MUSEUM NEWS
As a kid, I visited museums a lot, and I'd forgotten all the treasures there. But I have a new appreciation thanks to the very cool AND crafty Elizabeth from alteredbooklover.blogspot.com/ . In addition to sharing her lovely artwork, she posts these really incredible pictures from a museum in Kansas that shows old typewriters, dining rooms, libraries and more from back in the day. Be sure to take a peek at her blog if you get a chance.
Did you know that in 1872 The Metropolitan Museum of Art was opened in New York, and amazingly holds over 2 million pieces of art, and is over 2 million square feet? If you visit in person, you can pay what you want at the ticket counter, which sounds pretty incredible. If you purchase tickets on-line however, the price of admission is $25 per adult and $17 for senior citizens. Once you purchase a ticket, it's good to use for one year.
Get your FREE pancake short stack from IHOP on February 27 from 7am - 7pm. If you're thinking of filling up on these delicious treats all day, know that the FREE version only includes 3. If you're still hungry after that, make sure you have your wallet or purse.
This is one of those drinks that are tasty with or without alcohol, and will work at any party. Even better, it's a great way to relax with a good book.
Ingredients
1 Thick Slice Pineapple - peeled
1 Banana, peeled, sliced and roughly chopped
4/12 Tbsp Pineapple Juice
1 Scoop strawberry Ice Cream or Sorbet
1 2/2 Tbsp Coconut Milk
2 Tbsp Grenadine
DIRECTIONS
1. Cut up the pineapple and add to the blender with the banana
2. Add the pineapple juice to the blender and process until it's a smooth puree
3. Add the strawberry ice cream or sorbet to the blender, along with the coconut milk, and a small scoop of finely crushed ice, then process until smooth.
4. Pour the grenadine slowly on top of the drink. It will filter through the drink with a dappled effect. Decorate each glass with a wedge of pineapple or a strawberry, then serve with festive straws.
If you want to go classic instead, use vanilla ice cream and add 1 1/2 Tbsp Light Rum or more if you like to turn things up a little.
By the way, if you're a foodie, or even if you're just starting out, take a look at this really great site for yummy recipes and products for chefs and home cooks from our friends at https://www.village-bakery.
I'm a crafter, coupon shopper and book collector, so every once in awhile there seems like too many piles of stuff. So this weekend, has been all about decluttering. But...I've also been reading and that sort of cancelled out the organizational plan.(lol)
RO's Washi Tape all in one place |
Hard to put this one down! |
Bookmarks! I think I've collected them since I can remember. Funny, sweet, bizarre, I love them all.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Netflix was that pervasive and was such a great job. I wouldn't make it b/c I'd need more than six days off a year. :(
Yay for Nat'l Pancake Day!
Have a great weekend, Ro!
I need a whole lot more Sophia, because sometimes I end up misplacing them. (lol) I was pretty surprised to see that about Netflix too, and I'm one of the 100 million people who subscribe because I love my movies. Happy Friday! Hugs...RO
DeleteLike Sophia Rose, I also collect bookmarks. Most of them are cardboard photos of cute animals. P.S. Thanks for the Pina Colada recipe!
ReplyDeleteApparently, I need to take a page from you and Sophia about bookmarks, because I use them, but sometimes end up losing them. If I collected them like you guys did, I'd be much better off. (lol) Hugs and Happy Friday!
DeleteI've never been a person who dog ears. Always bookmarks for me now, proper ones, but I used to use anything from a piece of paper to a matchstick. Of course my e-reader doesn't forget where I am up to. Interesting about Netflix. I would guess that if you took off six weeks a year for holidays, then they would not all be paid leave.
ReplyDeleteGood for you Andrew, because I totally sucked at it as a kid. (lol) A matchstick sounds pretty cool. Netflix doesn't mess around at all with people calling out because of the high volume of people who want to work there. Hugs and Happy Friday! RO
DeleteI never did the corner thing, I figured that was breaking the rules.
ReplyDeleteI sure wish I would have known that as a kid. (lol) Hugs...RO
DeleteI have never been much of a bookmark user, although I have made many. I prefer using a post-it note to mark my place. I have never dog earred a book, so I cringe, too. Although I alter old books, my college books are pristine and don't even look used. Ont thing that bothers me is breaking the spine. It bothers me when people leave their books open upside down on their nightstands.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the museum shout out. I did basically the same when I visited the space museum and an underground salt mine.
Netflix sounds like the ideal place to work...
I saw the ad for Nat'l Pancake Day. LOVE your washi tapes! Very impressive collection.
Hope your weekend continues to be AWESOME!
Using post it notes is a pretty good idea too because they come in neat colors. That's pretty neat about your college books and that you still have them. A broken spine can be the pits, but I've seen that on lots of library books. The museum pics are truly amazing, and I loved it so much. I have way too many washi tape, but still keep collecting more, just like I do with books. (lol) Happy Friday and HUGE Hugs...RO
DeleteI'm not saying that I've never dog eared a page but for the most part I have always used a bookmark of one sort or another, anything from a piece of notebook paper folded over lengthwise several times to an index card. I have several bookmarks that I keep and use now but nothing you could call a collection.
ReplyDeleteAs for the free pancakes the three free ones would work for me because that's about all I could eat anyways.
I'm like you Jimmy, because as much I like the taste of pancakes, I can only really eat 1, or maybe 2. Folded up pieces of paper work well too! (lol) Hugs...and Happy Friday! RO
DeleteRight now, I am using 3 nice-and-firm bookmarks, which came free, at the library. Otherwise I cut up a index card, to make bookmarks. I have an aversion to "hurting" library books.
ReplyDeleteThat blog you mention... Altered Book Lover... Ohhh my! I so dislike the idea of altered books. Maybe it's a holdover, from my desire not to damage library books. ??????
But the museums peeks sound wonderful.
Mmmm, that drink sounds delicious, without the "booze". :-)
Ohhh, the decluttering went bye-bye, with the reading. Oh well, there is always tomorrow. :-))))
You're so right. The library really does have some nice bookmarks and even better that they're FREE.(lol) Elizabeth does some creative and lovely work over there, but I agree, damaging a library book would be the pits and plenty expensive! (lol) Sure hope your Friday is as amazing as you are! Hugs...RO
DeleteHa! My friend actually sent me that dog-ear/bookmark photo yesterday. I try to keep my books as pristine as possible. If it's a new paperback, I try not to open it too much while reading because I don't want to crease the spine. I've been known to borrow the library's ebook version of a book I already own because I don't want to accidentally damage my book. LoL
ReplyDeleteOmg I do the same thing. I have a bunch of books that look like they've never been read because I didn't crack the spine. lol
DeleteLOL! That's actually a pretty good idea Kristin and Mary! Hugs...RO
DeleteI'd work there for sure
ReplyDeleteIt definitely sounds like an interesting place to work. The ideqa of being able to see movies first would be cool! Hugs...RO
DeleteI used to dog ear too but now I have book marks all over the place.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I lose my bookmarks, and resort to pieces of paper, but I'm getting much better. Hugs...RO
DeleteGetting rid of clutter can be fun! I find things that I forgot I had :)
ReplyDeleteOnly bookmarks for my babies! I wouldn't want anyone to bend my corners :D
Hugsxxx
You're so right about that Jan. I remember finding money that I hid in a book many years ago, and was shocked! (lol) Ditto on the bookmarks. Hugs...RO
DeleteI'm an avid reader, and the only reason I don't make dog-eared pages any more is that I mostly read on my Kindle these days! Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteMore and more people are reading the Kindle these days, but I'm still old school and love my books. I don't know what I would do if every book was on ebook in the near future Valerie.(lol) Hugs...RO
DeleteI'm with you, Ro. I scramble around looking for bits of paper so I don't have to dog ear books. The daycare the grands are at came up with a cute moneymaker. They were selling artwork designated from the kids as bookmarks. It was a cute idea.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy your Sunday.
LOL! I've been known to use receipts, but pieces of paper will work too. That's a great idea and a wonderful way to start entrepreneurs early on. Happy weekend! Hugs...
DeleteNetflix sounds like a very cool place to work. I didn't know they had that many subscribers. I'm not one of them. My internet and our TV watching habits are just not suitable for Netflix. I'd be wasting my money.
ReplyDeleteIt's pretty amazing the volume of people that want to work there despite the absenteeism rule. In addition to being a booknerd, I love cooking programs, documentaries and movies so much. I agree, no need to waste that money, when you could use it buy other goodies you enjoy. Happy Friday! Hugs...RO
DeleteWow! I knew Netflix was big but I didn't know it was that big! I did have a spell where I dog eared my pages but it was pretty short lived and I don't think I was ever fully comfortable doing it! While I don't keep my books pristine I also get weird about damage on purpose!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely one of that 100 million Katherine.(lol) I'm like you and just have hard time these days if a book is harmed. Happy Friday and Hugs...RO
DeleteI have a bunch of bookmarks, but I'm most likely to use a scrap of paper or an empty envelope, ha ha.
ReplyDeleteWhatever works at the moment, right? Hope your Friday is a amazing! Hugs...RO
DeleteI'm enjoying the 'where to work' pieces. That's got to be helpful for folks in the job market. And it's interesting.
ReplyDeleteGood job, Rockin Ro.
Hugs
Thanks a bunch Super Sandra! You're always so supportive. I like the idea of finding cool places to work. You never know what can be found. I may switch it around and do the worst places to work next, right? (lol) Hugs...and Happy Friday! RO
DeleteI like the drink recipe, thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking of some other things to dress that one up too. Hugs...RO
DeleteYes, I dog ear my books! I am a bad girl! Sorry! LOL! I want to work for Netflix! How cool!! Thanks for the recipe! Looks really yummy! Big Hugs!
ReplyDeleteOh no!!!(lol) Netflix does seem like a cool place to work for sure! Hugs...RO
DeleteWoah, that's hardly any time off for working at Netflix. I don't think I'd make it. LOL All the perks would be awesome though. I used to randomly dog-ear my pages if I had nothing else, but I've used random stuff as bookmarks too. haha

There are so many people that want to work there, that they have zero tolerance for people calling out sick. Like you, I use random pieces of paper that I find around the house. Happy Saturday and Hugs...RO
DeleteMy mother in law used to have an absolute fit if you dog eared book pages, so I have so many bookmarks from her! It's my mom's birthday tomorrow, so maybe I'll take her to IHOP for some pancakes!
ReplyDeleteLOL - that's cool about your mom in law, and sounds like she's a serious reader too, huh? Glad she gave you lots of bookmarks. Hugs..and Happy Saturday! RO
DeleteI still have a fight with wifey when I see her not using respecting the book she reads (by not using a bookmark)
ReplyDeleteLOL! I'll bet there plenty of bookmarks at your house. Hugs...RO
Deletemy bookmark collection is huge it contains, kleenex, post-its, scrap paper and hundreds of custom bookmarks from authors, events etc... I don't have netflex, have never used it and don't plan to. I don't watch tv either so I'm not a netflex hater or anything. Good luck with decluttering, my library is in dire need of it but, maybe tomorrow ;-)
ReplyDeleteThat kleenex sounds fun Debbie! (lol) I can imagine you get zillions of bookmarks from authors that are overflowing. I definitely love watching my tv shows. I've given myself a deadline of March 12 to get this stuff done. Crossing my fingers. Happy Saturday and Hugs...RO
DeleteHi RO, I always remember Jon asking me what he should get me for Christmas. I said: “get me a bookmark “ “ but they only cost 50p” he said. “So what, I said” i’m still using it today. Simple things can mean a lot. It’s NOT how much a present costs that matters. Your blogpost was very good - if you’re American. If you’re English not so good. I still enjoyed reading it though.
ReplyDeleteTerry, you are so funny! I agree, it's the little things that count the most, and are often used quite often. I'll be Jon knows what to do now, right? (lol) Hugs...RO
DeleteI used to dog ear AND highlight my books before I started blogging lol
ReplyDeleteI use post-it tabs and bookmarks now but I did make the tiniest of dog ears yesterday when I was reading with no way to get a piece of paper. Oh the guilt!
Karen @ For What It's Worth
Oh no! I wish I could have been a fly on the wall when you had to do that dog ear the other day, Karen. (lol) Hugs...RO
DeleteThanks for checking on to see if I'm okay. It's an emotional time but I'm hanging on in there!
ReplyDeleteI don't fold down the corners or use bookmarks, well unless an unused piece of loo paper counts as a bookmark? :D
Always want to make sure you're doing well. I know you have so much going on in your life right now. I've been known to use little pieces of paper as bookmarks too. (lol) Hang in There! Hugs...RO
DeleteI have heaps of bookmarks and use them all the time. No dog eared books for me.
ReplyDeleteI bet you have a pretty amazing and lovely collection of bookmarks. Perhaps we can see them in an upcoming post? (hint, hint) (lol) Hugs and Happy Saturday! RO
DeleteAnd the moral of this story...don't order your Metropolitan Museum of Art tickets online:)
ReplyDeleteI thought that was funny, but also interesting. But for those who don't have an online presence and just show up one day to the window, this is truly a deal, right?(lol) Hugs...RO
DeleteLOL I use bookmarks but I'm not above a dog ear either. Heh So semi- monster.
ReplyDeleteAnd ooo look at all the pretty washi!
A semi-monster huh? (lol) You crack me up! hugs...and happy Harris Teeter shopping!
