THROWING BOOKS AWAY, TRIVIA & A RECIPE

The other day I ran into a blogger who was really interesting.  She reads and loves books, but when she's done, she usually gives them away.

I also have a very close friend who doesn't care about books at all, but somehow she manages to accumulate a bunch.  Some she gives to me, many go to charity and others are simply thrown away.

Another friend recently had many of her books destroyed by water damage, and we were all horrified that she lost some of her treasures.

This is actually a cake

Most of the readers I know save their books, have even larger TBR piles, or keep adding more to their already overflowing shelves.

My books are set up by author on some bookcases, and by genre on others.  I'm getting better, because at one time, they literally took over the house.  In some instances, it was even hard to get my friends back to the library!

I've also been known to save magazines, but have managed to whittle that down to keeping just those from 2013 up to now. (lol)

What about you?  When books seem to overflow, or you're tired of certain novels, do you simply get rid of them?

CRANBERRY LOVE
It's time to move on from the pumpkin spice to the cranberry extravaganza.  Some people like doing it the old school way and serving it right from the can, while others like to perk things up with personal recipes.

Have you noticed the Ocean Spray® commercials where the 2 guys are standing in water, surrounded by cranberries?  The first time I saw it, I thought it was totally fake.  It wasn't until later that I realized it's actually called a "bog", and you can typically find them along Washington State's Cranberry Coast, as well as Massachusetts and Wisconsin.  If you really like cranberries or just want to help with the harvest, tours are often available.  Check out www.cranberries.org for more info.

SHIRLEY'S CRANBERRY SAUCE
In case you're wondering who in the heck is Shirley, she's Alana Chernila's  grandmother,  who has since passed away. Alana shared this precious family recipe in Parents Magazine.

INGREDIENTS

2 Sweet Apples, cored and coarsely chopped
6 Oz. Fresh or Frozen Cranberries
1/2 Cup Water
1/4 Cup Sugar
1/4 TSP Salt
1/2 Cup Canned Pineapple Chunks, drained and coarsely chopped (or fresh)
1 Tbs Pure Maple Syrup

DIRECTIONS

1.  In a medium saucepan, combine the apples, cranberries and water.  Bring the mixture to a boil.  Cover the pot, and reduce the heat to medium-low.  Cook, stirring occasionally until the apples soften, and the cranberries burst - about 20 minutes.  Add the sugar and salt.  Continue to cook stirring often, until the mixture thickens - 6 to 8 minutes.

2.  Pass the mixture through a food mill, or allow it to cool first, then pulse it a few times in a blender.  Stir in the pineapple and the maple syrup.

3.  You can make this 5 days ahead and keep in the fridge.  This recipe is only 61 calories, but for those watching carbs, it includes 16 grams.

DO YOU LIVE IN THE RIGHT STATE?
If you live in the United States and play the lottery, you may not be living in the right place.  According to the Multi-State Lottery Association, these 4 states which all started their games in 1992, statistically have more Powerball winners than any other, and my son lives in one of them. (lol)

HOW RICH IS REALLY RICH?
When we think about people who are rich, Forbes and its annual list gives us the scoop, which includes Bill Gates.
But there are people who have been considered the richest of all time that most of us would never consider.

Bill Gates is considered the richest living person, and with a net worth of 86.7 billion he's only #9 on the list.

The person who is considered the richest person ever in history and commands the #1 spot is devout Muslim Mansa Musa, the King of Timbuktu or the Mali Empire.

In 1324 King Musa famously took a tour to Mecca, gave 72 tons of gold to the poor along the way, and used his empire's wealth to build libraries and mosques.  Pictures suggest that he sat on a golden throne, wearing a gold crown, holding a gold scepter and golden cup.  His fortune was just too huge to even imagine.

Just a reminder that Friday, November 11, is Veteran's Day, however, in some instances it may be celebrated on November 10.  Many of us will get together to grab freebies and discounts that include Golden Corral, Applebee's, Chili's, Krispy Kreme, Meineke - free oil changes, and more.

But I can't forget about the veterans who are struggling with addiction, illness, or homelessness.  Many are also victims of domestic violence.  Sadly, their situations may get worse as it gets  closer it gets to the holidays.

Sometimes all that's needed is a ride to a veteran's center, the use of a telephone to make calls, or food to eat.  Some are just too ashamed to ask or embarrassed, and at night when it's cold, they are crying, praying for a miracle or a helping hand.

  6. I know I should start with the books, but I want to start with the veterans. BTW, it is called Armistice Day, Remembrance Day, or Poppy Day in other countries. I do a post on it every year, but I only explain the history of the day. I feel the veterans seldom have a voice, so I think it's a worthy thing you are doing by pointing out suicides, depression, lack of caring by our government, and lack of interest by our society.

I had a flood in my basement and lost a TON of books, but none were to be read, but only used in art. I buy books, read the stories, look at the photos, then either put them on one or more of my bulging shelves or turn them into art. The only books that ever went to the trash (and NOT the recycle bin) were the ones too moldy to save. And I would never put books in a recycle bin, either. Thanks for sharing these book ideas and I also want that READ bookcase.

    1. You are so right Elizabeth. Sometimes the voices are not heard, and it truly saddens me. I've actually witnessed what can happen myself, so I'm glad I have a kindred spirit. Your books were your treasures and I hate that that happened to you, and have a friend in Illinois who experienced the same thing. She's a serious reader of romance. She even had to move. Isn't that bookcase the absolute best? Happy Sunday. I slowly catching up! Hugs...RO

I used to keep all my books, now I try to weed out what I'm not likely to reread and donate to Goodwill. Like you I have some by author and some by genre. And I have a shelf for myself. Heh heh. I hate when a book gets so used the only option is recycling, don't you?
Thanks for the reminder of Veterans' Day. They sure deserve our thanks and remembrance.
Fascinating info on wealth. I just can't imagine. I can picture comfort but not wealth.
And last but not least, thank you for your well wishes and stopping by the blog to check on me/family.
    I appreciate you.

    1. I have wonderef about wealth and believe that even if I had a ton of money, I would still get the same rush from finding freebies and using coupons. Something to ponder.(lol) I'm glad you have the strength to weed out Super Sandra. That's rough for me, but I do try to go through to get rid of duplicates. It really bugs me when I see a book that has had the cover and back removed. That just seems so nutty to me! Hugs...RO

  9. Funny enough, both Islam and Christianity had a fairly strong theme of rich people being "bad" and that needed to give their wealth away to the poor. Very few Christians or Muslims ever practiced what was preached when they got wealthy.

  11. I have recently begun massively purging my bookshelves, since I have no more room.. and this is after devoting an entire bedroom to books. Wall to wall bookshelves, and no room! And now we need to seriously look at converting this room to a kids bedroom in the near future.. that, or more to a new house! Kind of freaking out over where to put all my books that kids can't destroy them!! - http://www.domesticgeekgirl.com

  12. Ah books, a topic near and dear to my heart. I've been reading ebooks since 2000. I ran out of shelf space. Recently, I did a big clean out and donated a whole bunch of books to a book exchange. The only books I keep now are signed books that I collect.

    1. LOL! I ran out of space a long time ago, as well Deanna! Still, I keep adding to the ever growing pile. I can't warm up to ebooks, but I know more and more people are going that route for the convenience and space. I'll bet that book exchange totally loved you! That's cool that you get lots of books that are signed. That makes them extra special treasures. Hugs...

  15. I grew up with a Mother who loved to read and had a room that had bookshelves full of them. So, I guess it was in my genes to love to read too. My book shelves are overflowing, but when one my kids friends need or want a book they come and to see if we have it and I love to be able to give it to them. We are in process of looking for a bigger house and I would love to be able to have a room to make a small library room. But we'll see.

I want a cake like that! IT'S BOOKS!!!!!

    1. What a blessing to have a mom who loved books and passed that on to you. Sometimes it feels good to have the bookcases overflow, but eventually my sense of order gets to me, making me need more shelves. How kind that young people want to read and can come to you. What an awesome idea! Ooh, can't wait to see if you can add that library, Jenea! Pics and more pics and good luck with the house hunting. Happy Sunday! Hugs...RO

  16. One of the reasons I love ebooks so much is that I never know what to do with the books once I'm finished! I do try to get books signed by all my friends and I keep those on my bookshelf, but everything else is an ebook!

    1. I know you really enjoy your ebooks Steph, but I just can't warm up to them. I'm going to be in trouble 20 years from now if actual books become obsolete, right? (lol) That's cool that you get lots of signed copies. That makes it really special. Happy Sunday! Hugs...RO

  17. I can’t throw books away, but I do pass on paperbacks once I’ve read them. Vintage books, hardbacks and anything I think of as special go on to shelves, or in piles. Anywhere I can find to put them really.
I have seen that advert and also assumed it was fake, thank you for enlightening me.

  18. I'll be honest, I don't understand the pumpkin spice craze. There's no actual pumpkin in any of it. I tend to go for the actual squash... and all squashes around this time. The Mister is kind of over eating pumpkin this, and acorn squash that though. LoL I promised to give him a break but come next week I'm making pumpkin alfredo. Ha!
As for books, because my husband's job requires us to move every few years, I try to only keep the books I love or felt a deep connection to. Anything that is meh or I didn't care for gets put in a pile and is either given away on the blog, donated to my library, and if they are ARCs I take them to the local free little library stands in the neighborhood.

    1. Girl, I'm with you with the Pumpkin Spice, and it seems like it's everywhere! I need to eat squash, but even that I stay away from. (lol) How did the pumpkin alfredo turn out? I had that problem too, when I was in the Air Force and also the telecommunications business. I moved quite a bit, and books caused most of my weight. (lol) Great idea to give them away on the blog, and the library, and very kind. Happy Sunday! Hugs...RO

  20. When I see a post about books, it grabs my attention RO!
I have hundreds of books on many different subjects and by various authors. The only way that I "get rid of books" is if someone borrows a book and forgets to return it or I gift one to someone who truly wants it better than me. I may post about one special book that almost never came home...but finally did! Love that cake book!!!

  21. I've been making an effort to purge some of my books over the last year or so. We have about 19 bookcases in the house, and they're all full, and there are several boxes and piles of books around as well. It's gotten out of hand. I'm trying to cut back to just the books I either love or use regularly... which will still be an awful lot, but it should at least eliminate the boxes and piles. One thing making it easier is that the changes in my vision now that I'm in my 50s mean that some print is just too small to read comfortably. I'm replacing some of my favorite paperbacks with Kindle books, and letting go of anything that's too small to read.

  25. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
