HAS THIS HAPPENED TO YOU?
I've watched a ton of  movies in my lifetime, and one thing I've noticed consistently is how strange people show up at the front door with all kinds of goodies like pies and casseroles as a welcome for new neighbors.
I'm pretty sure it's  happened on Leave It To Beaver, and I think it may have have done it on The Brady Bunch, but don't quote me on that. I've lived in Kansas, Maryland, Texas, South Carolina, Washington State, North Dakota, North Carolina, and Mississippi, and not once have I ever been the recipient of a really yummy apple pie!
What's up with that?  Has anyone ever delivered a casserole or other goodies to your house? Inquiring minds are wondering if this practice is a dying art.

Nashville Hotspot

Can't get this deal anymore!
SAY WHAT?
To be honest, I've always seen really elegant hotels and lots of neat things to do in Nashville, so imagine my surprise when I heard this news just the other day. Hotels and motels have been banned from renting rooms to customers for anything less than 10 hours in an effort to stop sexual quickies and illegal drug deals.  If you decide to rent the room for the whole time and then leave early, you're out of luck. They won't be giving out any deals or discounts.

WHITE HOUSE NEWS
George Washington may have been president, but he never actually lived in the White House.  Why? It wasn't finished being built until a year after he died.

DIAMOND
This just seems hard to imagine, but the largest clear cut diamond in the world is called The Star of Africa I or also the Cullinan Diamond I. This 530+ carat pear shaped beauty is actually part of the royal sceptre and gets to hang out with all the other crown jewels in The Tower of London.  If they ever decide to sell this treasure, and you have the cash,, be prepared to shell out $400 million smackaroos.

HEALTHY TIPS
Sara Haas, a Registered  Dietitian Nurse says you can make easy swaps to lose weight. If you usually drink Coca-Cola with lunch, drink flavored water instead and save 4,640 calories per year.

If you like Berry Smoothies, and who doesn't in this heat, eat a bowl of mixed blackberries/strawberries/ raspberries instead, and save a whopping 55,845 calories annually.

I'M PASSING ON THIS
Do you remember The Gong Show from 1978 with Chuck Barris?  Well, they brought it back in June with a disguised Mike Myers as the host.  I can't lie - back in the day, I found myself laughing out loud with the absurdity of it all, but now, not so much.  Allowing a giant Tarantula to crawl in and out of your mouth is not very entertaining or cute/  In fct, Dr. Ken who was one of the judges, gave her a 0 because he was just too grossed out. Also,  married couples just shouldn't  dance around the stage thinking of ways to shoot banana pieces into each others mouth for grins and giggles.  Ugh!  One word to this show - GONG!
What's more disturbing than anything is how the star judges actually think it's funny, making me think something strange is up.

YES, THIS IS A THING
As a teen, I had a boyfriend with one light brown eye and one blue eye, and everyone thought it was the neatest thing. He told me the eye condition affected only males in every other generation of his family. He was gorgeous but I had to dump him after 2 months because he was too handsy with other girls.

Did you know that July 12 is Different Colored Eyes Day?

Someone with this fascinating trait has heterochromia, which is a rare condition that can affect 6 out of 1000 people. There are stars you've seen on television who have this trait, and include Jane Seymour and  Kate Bosworth.

Kalahari is the world's largest indoor water park located in the Poconos Mountains in Pennsylvania. To find out how you can get all wet this summer, visit www.kalahariresorts.com/pennsylvania.

Do you like a thrill?  If so, Visit the Kingda Ka in Six Flags.  It is the tallest rollercoaster in the world at 456 feet, and the fastest in North America where you'll reach a speed of 128 miles in just 3.5 seconds. Talk about a rush!

But if you'd rather relax while you're in the Poconos, they still actually have these sexy hotels.

GPS YES
Who would you want to be the voice on your GPS?  Sam Elliott has this smooth voice that I would totally love to direct me to my next location.  Yes, I know he's been married to the very beautiful actress Katharine Ross since 1984, but a girl can dream, right?

HOMELESS NEEDS
Many are experiencing the extreme heat of the summer, and forced to live on the street.  We can help in small ways by keeping  ziploc bags in our cars that include socks, toothpaste/toothbrush, lotion, bottled water, snacks, deodorant, washrags, soap, shampoo, pens/notepads/crayons,word puzzle books (small ones are in the Dollar Tree), coloring books, misting bottles, bug spray, small toys, toilet paper, etc.
These things may not seem like much, but to a person who has no place to go, it can make all the difference.  These Care Bags can be given to shelters, as well as those we may see in need along the way.

  1. I really like the care bags for the homeless, this is such a huge deal everywhere now and like you said something like this can really make a big difference.

I have never received an apple pie either when moving into a new place, but we did find ourselves taking a cake and some flowers to the new folks who moved in next door just recently.

excellent post RO a lot of good info.

  2. When I was in kindergarten we moved from Ohio to Connecticut. The day we moved our new across the street neighbors brought over two large pizzas for our family of 6. I thought it was great- my mom probably was even happier! After that I moved a good number of times and no one brought food- until my husband and I bought our first house 13 years ago. The neighbor across the street brought over fresh baked cranberry bread. I was actually afraid to eat it (since I didn't know the person giving it to us)- but my husband was thrilled and ate it with coffee for a couple of days (the neighbor was an an art teacher at the local high school so he felt comfortable eating it, plus I don't bake so this was a good opportunity for him). I think most people don't bring food to neighbors nowadays, but I could be wrong. My mom has lived in over 20 states- so I will have to ask her about her experiences (she is the kind of person to bring baked goods to a new neighbor). :)

Great post! You got me thinking about a lot of things. :)

    1. So thrilled that you stopped by Stephanie! Sounds like you've moved as much as I have, and kudos on the kindness from those neighbors. I just don't think people are doing this the way they used to, but I could be wrong. Hugs...

  3. The eggs look good. I would probably add onions and mushrooms.
The homeless item hit a nerve. My city has a very big (and growing) number of homeless people. A centre close to where I do my voluntary work supports them and among other things provides breakfast Monday to Friday and weekend packs to take away. For quite some time now I have been stopping in and providing things to go in the weekend packs. This morning we did grocery shopping and I picked up a dozen small tins of tuna (ring-pull cans) to take with me next time.

    2. You are just so amazing and kind to help those in need. Like you, I have a soft spot for the homeless and the abused There are so many who are truly struggling and hurting. I'm with you, and don't think it happens as much as it used to with the welcomes to a neighborhood. Things have truly changed. I would just love to meet you and hug you one day! Hugs...

  4. I limit my cheese intake but it always hard for me to resist cheesy eggs. I’ve never had cheesy baked eggs before. I actually don’t answer the door when people knock, I live alone so i can’t just open the door to anybody. If I didn’t live alone then I wouldn’t be so nervous and maybe I could enjoy my neighbors and all the goodies they might bring .

  7. When we bought our first home in NJ, we were greeted with a basket from town welcoming community, and neighbors popped in with goodies the first week. I have given several, and when I sell a home, I always leave a little gift for new owners. However, it didn't happen at our next 4 homes, so I think it is a dying art, much like politeness, and common courtesy.

    1. Wow! That's super cool about the baskets you used to receive, and how you kept the kindness moving. I agree with you, and think that society is definitely changing from when we grew up. Hugs...

  8. We got a welcome basket from our new town's small business group, but the neighbors were still friendly and came over to say hi when we were out in the yard.

That new Gong show sounds bizarre.

Great idea with the carepacks in the car to hand out. Might want to keep them in one of those cool bags though if there are things that can't get hot because our summers heat up the car unless one is making a quick trip where they know a homeless person stakes out.

  9. I LOVE Sam Elliott. And I did not realize he was married to Katherine Ross. Sounds like a perfect match.

  13. I've never received a casserole nor have I ever given one but I always assumed that was just because I was anti-social! I remember when we moved when I was a kid and the real estate agent showed up that day with a platter of sandwiches and cookies which was much appreciated but that was a bit different. I love the idea of a picking a voice for my GPS. I'm leaning towards Benedict Cumberbatch because he has such an authoritative voice. I love that egg recipe! I'm not the biggest egg fan but eggs with cheese is a whole different story.

  14. That indoor water park looks fun. We're getting one of those at Opryland Resort...rooms are $500-$1,000 or more a night, though, so I don't see myself ever staying there! As for casseroles and neighbors, when we moved in here, our next-door neighbor gave us an iris. She also gave us the exact same type of iris to thank us for something a year ago. She's big on those irises!

    1. With this heat, I'm ready to lay under an outdoor faucet Steph. (lol) Wow! That's steep for a hotel room, but I have to assume they would be quite elegant and lovely. The nosey neighbor wanted to know if my daughter and I moved in with my father LOL, now I know my husband is a few years older but I've always looked younger than my age and I never fail to tease him about it. Thanks for the trivia too. Homelessness really needs to be eradicated I just wish I knew the answer. Hugs RO

  19. So yesterday was different eyes day? I am always amazed by those "holidays", there is even a "7-Eleven Day" as I recently learned.
Didn't know that George Washington never got to live in the White House.
I quit Coke (Zero) two years ago, just about now, which was a big deal for me, as I have been an addict for over 20 years. Berries are definitely better for me.

    1. Those special holidays are always super fun for me, for some reason. *heh* In an effort to cut down on sugar, I stopped drinking soda, too. I had a friend once who had to have a Giant Gulp of Coke from 7-11 EVERY morning, and she was my boss. One day she forgot, and we all had hell to pay. (lol) I've been binging on berries and plums lately. Hugs...

  20. I love the idea about keeping baggies of goods for those in need. It's a great way to help out.

Due to the Mister's job, we move around the country every few years. I've never had anyone bring me anything because I was new to the neighborhood. However, a handful of years back I was taking cake decorating classes and it ended right before the 4th of July. Our project was a layered cake and I did it up for the holiday, but there was way too much cake for us. So, I took a tier over to my neighbor. They were a little surprised by that since we never really talked. So it was pretty random. LoL

I've read quite some cozy mysteries where the main character takes a casserole to the family of the deceased. I didn't know it also happened with new neighbors. I never really have heard of that happening in real life. I do think the gesture is nice.

I am not a fan of rollercoasters, so that ride wouldn't be for me.

I do like that idea of care packages for the homeless.

My name is DOROTHY LISA, I want to share a great testimony on this website on how great a man called Prophet Abulele helped me in getting pregnant, me and my husband have been trying to have a baby for over 12 years, but they were no luck so we decided to contact the family doctor and after all the test have been done, he said to us that my Fallopian tube is not functioning. then one day I was in the office when a friend of mine who had the same problem with me, got her baby after she contacted Prophet Abulele. she directed me to him and when I contacted him through his email: prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com and he prayed for me and sent me an herbal medicine, which I took for few days and in 3 weeks’ time, as he told me, i was feeling somehow and I went to meet the family doctor who told me that I am pregnant. if you know that you have a similar problem like this, or any fertility issue and you want to be pregnant you can contact Prophet Abulele: prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com OR WhatsApp him on +2349022406159
