THIS AND THAT AND OTHER USELESS STUFF

For those who don't know, I've been visiting the same barber shop for years to get my hair cut because I try to keep it really short.  What you may not know is that all 5 barbers  look like someone from www.fitstuds.blogspot.com(lol).  I asked the owner if it was a requirement to look like that to work there, but he swears that it just worked out that way

If you're lucky enough to get there early in the morning, you'll see them practicing new fitness moves, lifting weights or talking about exercise stuff.  They're always quick to hand me a 10 lb barbell, but I promise that no one wants to unsee a vision of Ms. RO pumping iron.(lol)

If someone gifted you with lots and lots of candy during the holidays, you'll be pleased to know that 12/26 is National Candy Cane Day.  Feel free to re-gift or use them in recipes.  By the way, the candy cane capital of the world is located in Bryan OH, which is home to Spangler Candy Company.

Do you like crossword puzzles?  Every now and then I work on those that are pop-culture related.  Did you know that the very first crossword puzzle was printed in the New York World in 1913? Originally it was called Word Cross, but an error during publishing transposed the letters to what we all know and love as Crossword.

Have you ever been curious about those personality tests?  Here's one you can take to get a FREE analysis of who you are, and you may be quite surprised at the results.
Visit 16personalities.com/infj-personality.

Come on  - it's just between us, but have you ever taken something from a hotel?  Did you know that theft from hotels can exceed $100 million dollars annually?  If you're caught trying to take that very nice mirror, flat screen television, hair dryer or coffee pot, you may not get locked up, but your name could show up on the "No Stay List", the next time you try to book a hotel.  Still, some people have been arrested, and sometimes the charges are simply added to the bill.   Hotels expect you take all those tiny bottles of shampoo, conditioner and soap, but those very cool, fluffy robes are not giveaways.

Would you rather text than speak on the telephone?  You may be surprised to know that the Philippines is considered the texting capital of the world, sending on average over a billion texts per day!!!!  They're also known as the social media capital of the world because they spend about 4 hours per day on various social media platforms.  Wow!

Speaking of texting - how quickly can you type "
The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."?   If you can type this faster than 17 seconds on your cell phone, you'll beat the current Guinness World Record holder, Marcel Fernandes Filho who won when he was 17.  He's held the record since 2014.

Not to be confused with Tom's recent MI rant
Are you a person who's always looking for a high paying job, but don't want to work that hard?  You may be surprised to know that hotels are on the hunt for bed warmers so guests don't have to get into cold beds, and the annual salary can reach up to $200,000.  Hearing aid specialists test hearing and fit customers with hearing aids, and this vocation is on the rise. All you need is a high school diploma and minimal training to get paid close to $60,000 a year!

No, I have no clue who this woman is, but I was intrigued by her job as an Official Lipstick Reader, and thought I'd share her info.  This is a real thing, blogger buds, and she's considered an intuitive psychic.  You can visit her site at http://officiallipstickreader.com  or call 877-605-6389.

CINNAMON SPICE MILK PUNCH
(Sandra Lee)
8 Cups Vanilla Ice Cream
1/2 Cup Bourbon Whiskey
1 Tablespoon Vanilla Extract
1/2 Teaspoon Ground Cinnamon + additional cinnamon sticks if you like.

In a blender, combine half of the ice cream, bourbon, vanilla and ground cinnamon.  Cover and process until totally smooth, then pour into a punch bowl.  Repeat with the remaining ice cream, bourbon, vanilla and ground cinnamon. Serve garnished with ground cinnamon and cinnamon sticks.  Enjoy all that yumminess!

I'm going to end this post with a conversation I had with someone who's been a friend for 30+ years, and I totally adore, and he told me this.  " We wear our masks all the time - even during sex".  How's that for a conversation starter, Blogger Buds?

Aren't these some fun trees?

  1. As always I learned a ton here. I am not sure about the bedwardmers- sounds like a good job, but I don't want anyone sleeping in my bed before me.

Love seeing all the creative trees! So many was to decorate.

Hmm- masks all the time. Well, I suppose they are being super safe and if they don't mind it- then good for them. :)

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays too! Enjoy!

  2. okay Ro there was a lot to digest here! Good stuff. I would not wish to workout prior to my haircut but the eye candy may be nice. I prefer a dad bod myself with great arms. :-) I have NEVER or would NEVER take anything from the hotel. My grandmother owned a hotel. I grew up in a tourist town. The theft was amazing and it cost her so much money. This was not a Hilton. So she ended up having less ameneties that cuold be stolen. Because I saw what she went through I would never ever take anything. Besides I leave the room cleaner than when I arrived. I used to have to help my grandmother when a cleaning person didn't show up for work in the summer. I got called - yuk! People are pigs so I make sure I never leave a room like that! Good Italian Catholic Guilt! ...tee hee

    1. I totally agree with you. I had a friend who was a Housekeeping Manager, and he had to inspect the rooms once they were cleaned. Often, the work wasn't done properly and had to be redone. Items found in the rooms were kept for 30 days before being discarded or given away. Like you, I'm not trying to pay for anything extra, so I don't take anything!(lol) So glad that you're feeling a little better. Hugs, RO

  14. I had no idea crossword puzzles were so recent in origin. It seems like a rather obvious concept.

Never actually been to a barber. Whenever I notice hair sticking out or overgrowing where I don't want it to, I just snip it off. It's worked OK for 40 years, even if you may think me a barberian for it.

How the hell does anybody expect to get away with stealing a flatscreen TV from a hotel? It's not like they wouldn't know who took it. They'd notice it was gone right away. No, I have never stolen anything from a hotel. Some of us have ethics. I'll take the small bar of soap if I've opened one, but only because they don't want to keep a used one for the next person anyway.

It's a bit surprising that they can't come up with a better way of warming up beds than having an actual person lie in them. I just hope they don't suddenly decide to save us from cold toilet seats too.

Can't stand telephoning, don't know how to text, don't care to learn. Stick to e-mail like Satan intended. Never would have guessed texting is especially popular in the Philippines, though.

Wearing masks during sex is silly unless you have a kink for it. If you're having sex, the option of maintaining biological isolation is pretty much expired. And of course there's the major drawback Debra pointed out. Anyway, I suspect a person who brings up such a thing may be trying to start more than just a conversation.

Those trees are amazing, especially the rainbow one. I think I could actually build the last one. I've gotten behind with recycling due to the pandemic and stuff accumulates.

I don't think I'll avail myself of the services of the Official Lipstick Reader. Wearing lipstick isn't a look that would suit me, for one thing. But the results may be about as reliable as an online personality test.

Cats and Christmas do not mix. Just imagine trying to wrap one.

    1. I was really surprised about the crossword tidbit too. Seemed like it was definitely around a lot longer. I've been going to barbers for years and years in various states, but the one I go to now is quite entertaining.(lol) Like you, I'm very scared of prison, so I'm not trying to steal anything from a hotel for sure. I hear you on the toilet seats(lol), but I also carry along my own cleaner just in case. I can deal with it being cold. I text and talk on the phone, but since I was a Call Center Manager/Director for many, many years I do tend to minimize talking on the phones whenever possible.(lol) My best friend always says wild things. He's gay, so he's not trying to start too much other than to make me laugh or shock me.(lol) And he's managed to do it for 30+ years. He lives in another state these days, but I sure miss hanging out with him. Those trees are so fun, and I love the creativity. Very cool if you could build one, and we'll be waiting for the pic, please(lol) The Lipstick REader sounds fun, but her prices are out of my range right now. I sure hope I don't see cats and Christmas trees wrapped together any time soon, but if I do, you'll definitely be the first to know!(lol) Sending lots of holiday hugs your way, and as always, thanks for the shout out! 19. Once again, I'm late to the party. Sadly, life got in the way of computer time yesterday and today. I'm in catch-up mode now.

I think they have closed our hair dresser and barber shops in Kansas because of the covid outbreak. I know I don't want to get a haircut right now. My friend Scott has cut my hair this summer and I've loved it. Saved me tons of money, too. I'd love to see you pumping iron. That is a vision I can't unsee.

I used to like crossword puzzles, but now I use them as backgrounds for art. You may keep all my candy canes. They don't interest me at all. And I have only taken the little shampoos and soaps, but never anything that could get me in trouble. A friend gave me a towel from a hotel. She told me the hotel had changed hands and changed names, so they were giving the towels away. She got six. She is an honest person and I believe her, especially after I went on the internet and saw the name of the hotel chain had been sold to a different company. No robes, though.

  23. "The Rabbit of Seville" is one of my favorite Bugs Bunny shorts.

I'm a crossword junkie, to the point that I get uncomfortable if I leave one undone. In this digital age, I still get a daily newspaper, the Baltimore Sun, pretty much just for the comics and puzzles. Each day I do the syndicated Sun puzzle, the NYT puzzle, the jumble and the Sudoku. And of course, I have to hold on to it until the following day so I can grade it. What's the point if you don't grade it? Hell, you could just put anything in there to fill the spaces! Eventually, I started keeping a spreadsheet of my results, so I could track my streaks of correct puzzles. (It's a sickness.)

As for hotels, I don't take anything but the shampoo and maybe soap. When I was younger, I liked to take the Do Not Disturb signs, but I stopped that when a maid caught me. She asked me where the sign was and I was like, "Duh, I dunno." She knew.

As for haircuts, I've given up on them, now in the Age of Rona. I bought some professional clippers this spring and now I just have Sweetpea shear me off out in the back yard. (The first time we tried with my beard trimmers and it didn't work worth a darn. Took about 30 minutes, when the Hair Cuttery used to do me in 5.)

    Have a great Christmas!

That's pretty interesting and fascinating about your crossword addiction. I dabble, but there are some blank spaces left once I'm done. Apparently I should have been calling you to fill them all in.(lol) Kudos to you! Like you, I do still read the Sunday paper, and I get free subscriptions to tons of magazines. Only one or two have crossword puzzles though. I had stopped going because the barber had closed his shop, but then the restrictions changed, so he reopened, but there were lots and lots of changes he made inside, including how many people can actually be in there at one time. Kudos to anyone who has a haircutter at home. That saves on lots of werewolves hanging around. I was telling a friend about how you used to take Do Not Disturb signs and couldn't help giggling. Always such fun to know little secrets like that. Merry Christmas to you and Sweet Pea too! Sending some Holiday Hugs to you both! RO

    2. For some reason, Sweetpea loves the fact that I do crosswords. She used to think they were to hard but I got her doing them now as well. And she loves to help me on mine. I usually don't want the help because it taints "the streak." (Same with googling the answers.) But sometimes I just don't have a clue and I'll say, "Honey, I need to bring in the closer." Sometimes all I need is one answer and the rest fall into place. Of course, I have to then note her participation on the spreadsheet. Can't take credit where it isn't due.

      Merry Christmas RO!

  25. I always look forward to your posts and I really need some cheer this year as you know. Last year our youngest daughter and her hubby took us to FL for our 40th Anniversary and as we were checking out hubby wanted the do not disturb sign from the condo, it said No Wake Zone which is an obvious play on words if you're a boater at all and when we got home and I was unpacking there was a white washcloth in my suitcase, yes he thought we should have a souvenir. LOL

I say a white washcloth was definitely earned Debbie!(lol) Who knows what my best friend and his partner are doing behind closed doors, Debbie. But if I ever asked, I promise he would tell me all about it!(lol!!) Be well, my friend! RO

Some funny as heck, some illegal as heck(lol) I used to be a Call Center Manager and Director for close to 20 years, so I do minimize talking for long periods of time when I can.(lol) When I had that job I was literally talking all day and sometimes through the night because of issues. I wouldn't mind getting paid to warm someone else's bed, but I just say NO to someone doing it for me(lol) We've been friends for so long, and when we were younger he said even crazier things than he does now. On the way to a club in Washington DC a zillion years ago, I had on these awesome red heels with a black mini skirt, and he told me they were "hooker shoes" so I better be ready to get paid for the night. I couldn't stop laughing and told him those shoes looked pretty dang good, and somebody better be ready to pay some big money.(lol) Merry Christmas right back to you and your family! Too funny about the barber shop! I would never take something from a hotel, except the little travel size thingies if I have opened them, or occasionally a pen by accident. But other stuff? Never.
