THE # 1 THING NEVER TO DO AT WALMART

The other day, I had to pick up some medication in Walmart, so I hung out for the required 30 minutes on those super hard metal chairs that everyone hates. Normally, I catch up on reading, but decided to people watch instead. One thing stood out more than anything else.

A young girl about 5 years old drove up on a shiny new red tricycle with the tags still on, alone.  She quickly got up from her seat, moving 2 bottles of Calcium over to the Flintstones Vitamin area of the shelf. She also calmly shuffled the Fish Oil over to the Vitamin C area. She got back on her "borrowed" bike and promptly left the area.  She came back for trip 2 to move the Iron over to something I've never heard of - Red Yeast Rice, and left again.  Determined to show her organizational expertise, she drove back over to move the ICaps over to the Centrum Silver area to help out all the elderly folks.  I have no clue where she went after she left each time, but I did notice that there was no adult around to hold her hand or to stop her from redecorating the vitamin section in Walmart.

When she came back again, I politely asked where her parents were, with no response. She looked at me strangely, but did follow me over to the Customer Service Department where they made an announcement about a lost little girl.
The kid started crying as four adult women came over to the desk, but I got the evil eye.  Uh...OK. I'm not a fan of young kids because they can't have a discussion about the Food Network, chauffeur me around or do any laundry. AND they need a ton of supervision! Please forgive me for thinking that a pervert may have grabbed your little girl at any moment while you shopped for goodness knows what.  Was I the bad guy for jumping in?  Bottom line - don't leave tiny children alone to roam the aisles of Walmart by bike, skateboard, inner tube or on foot!

SHRIMP LINGUINE PUTTANESCA
INGREDIENTS
2 Tbsp Olive Oil
1/4 Cup Pitted Kalamata Olives
2 Cloves Garlic, chopped
1 Tbsp Capers that have been rinsed
4 Cups Low-Sodium Chicken Broth
1 Cup Marinara Sauce of your choice
12 Oz. Linguine Noodles
1 Lb Medium Shrimp
8 Oz. Plum Tomatoes, roughly chopped
1/2 Cup Fresh Basil Leaves, torn, or use what's in a jar

Black Pepper

DIRECTIONS
1.  Heat the oil, olives, garlic and capers in a large deep skillet over medium heat until the garlic is light golden brown, about 2 minutes.  Remove from the heat, then mix in the broth and marinara sauce.

2.  Add the linguine and bring to a boil.  Reduce the heat and simmer, stirring often for 10 minutes.

3.  Nestle in the shrimp in the mixture ad cook until opaque throughout - 3 to 4 minutes. Cooking it longer will make it rubbery.  Fold in the tomatoes, basil and pepper.  For more heat, go ahead and add cayenne or red pepper.

This is also a great meal without the shrimp.

Are you suffering from debilitating back pain?  Are you on the phone all the time, all day long?  The best fix for your back and to minimize bad posture is to use headphones with built in microphones instead of bending over to read all those texts.

Johnny Cash was a brilliant entertainer, and one of the few people in the world to have won 20 Grammy's. He is also the only person to have been sued by the government after an oil leak from his personal camper caused a forest fire that destroyed over 500 acres of wildlife in California.  In case you're wondering how much he was sued for, it was a whopping $1 Million Dollars!

  1. Wow! The little girl sounds like she's good at entertaining herself which is good but I can't imagine letting a child that little go that long without supervision! I'd be worried something could happen to them or they'd cause something to happen! I had no idea that the government sued Johnny Cash! How interesting!

  2. Nothing is too shocking in walmarts sadly. That's why I typically stay out of them.

  3. I agree with Katherine "I can't imagine letting a child that little go that long without supervision! I'd be worried something could happen to them or they'd cause something to happen!"

  4. OMG. I did not know that about Johnny Cash!
Children should never be left alone. Not only is there a nuisance factor, but what if someone had kidnapped that child?

  5. It's been on the news every summer that parents at least around here, drop their kids, even little kids off at toy stores, game stores, stores like Walmart that have toy sections and leave them there by themselves so they can run errands. I'm not even kidding. Some stores in the mall had to actually put signs up that kids have to be accompanied by an adult that if kids are left alone the police will be called.

    1. That is horrible that a parent would do something like that with their own children! Kids being hurt shows up on the news all the time. I had no idea things like this were going on.

  7. When I discovered through one of my Child Protective Services trainings that I was legally responsible to report whether I was on or off the clock, I used to avoid going to certain places to shop or for entertainment. Walmart, Target, K-mart, movie theaters, and any toy store you can name are way up there on the list because, I kid you not, I would spend each trip reporting at least one incident that counted as child abuse and neglect and even some animal cruelty cases. Starting from kids and pets being left in vehicles in extreme cold or heat, to kids left running loose alone in stores with no adult responding to the store's page, to kids getting physically abused. The actual physical abuse sightings I had no issue reaching for my phone and notepad on, but the kids off alone got annoying because, you're right, getting the store to call the parent to the service desk and getting the parental scowls and cuss-outs was not fun. But the good news is that it got me supporting independent, local businesses more frequently when I went out and shopped and who needs to pay theater or mall prices. ;)

Oh yum! Love shrimp and pasta dishes.

Wild about the Johnny Cash fine, but good that he didn't get off any more than anyone else who caused a fire that destroyed acres of trees, dangers to the emergency crews, people, and possibly property.

    1. Wow! I had no idea it worked like that, Sophia. Sort of sounds like a cop. It's so sad that parents or guardians neglect their kids forcing others to get involved to help. Thank goodness there are people like you out there who know what's going on and assist, even at the risk of being yelled at by the parents. That is a really good idea though to frequent businesses that may not be that well known, and to meet new friends. Hugs...

  8. Wow..nope. I never left my children unattended. I once saw a child breaking the heads of all the flowers in the floral department. When an attendent told the young child . No sweetie, we don't break the heads of flowers, the mother lost her shit screaming at the attendant. Apparently they don't use words like No with their child. *shakes head* Awe Ro now I am craving some shrimp and pasta!!

    1. That's crazy! Why would a parent allow their kids to learn and keep bad habits out in public like that? I just had a little bit of pasta myself (lol) Hugs...

  9. Wait...did I hear that correctly? The women gave you a dirty look for reporting a lost child? Parents make me SO MAD!!! They should be forced to listen to the story of Adam Walsh's abduction and murder until they realize just how dangerous it is to let a kid roam alone in a public place.

    1. It took everything I had to maintain my temper, because that child could have easily ended up on the nightly news. Had that happened to me, I would have been thrilled to have my child back. That story with Adam was heartbreaking, and I totally agree with you. Hugs...

  10. You did the right thing RO...wow, some people are so stupid!!!
That little girl should not have been by herself, let alone "borrowing" a bike to travel all over the store!
What if she had run into someone trying to find something that she had rearranged on some shelf! God forbid that someone bought the wrong thing...not hard to do when you are elderly.
Children should always be in full view of their parents or whatever adult is in charge. There are to many ways for children to go missing without supervision!!!
    Your recipe looks very yummy!!!
Poor Johnny Cash. I am sure he didn't intend for that to happen...but my heart goes out more to the wildlife who lost their lives and the 500 acres of forest that were burned~

    Hugs~

    1. Jan, you make some really good points because it can be hard for an elderly person to find the proper medication, and the fact that this kid was traveling all over the store alone was crazy! Sad about Johnny Cash, and I know he felt bad. I hear he paid the fine with no problems. Hugs...

  14. Wow, wow, wow... that little girl should not have been allowed to run free in the store, they would be the first to lose their mind and blame everyone around if their child had been picked by a pervert... what is wrong with people? I never let my child just go wherever she wanted, I had her with me, usually in the cart... Then to get mad at you, they need to take a look in the mirror xox

    1. I agree Launna, part of parenting is keeping your child close and safe, and you're right, had something happened, I'm sure they would have blamed the store. I remember doing that with my son too, and sometimes he got mad, but he's still around to tell people about it too, right? (lol) Hope your weekend was fab!

  16. you remember the names of all those products? I wouldn't be able to focus on that. I don't know why people just leave their kids alone like that but they shouldn't give you such a look for interfering. but this does make a cute story.

    1. LOL! You're too funny Lissa! I was stuck there waiting for my medicine and that was my entertainment. I'm glad to have intervened, but there's a message here to watch your kids. I did try to make it fun, but I've seen too many amber alerts, and way too many news stories that ended badly because someone snatched a precious little one. Hope your weekend was amazing!

  17. But Wal-Mart IS their babysitter. It has free rental toys, and fun puzzles for her to figure out (like what the hell Red Yeast Rice is). How dare you interrupt her education!

Nah, just kidding. What I see go down in a Wal-Mart every time I'm in one continues to shock me. I really shouldn't be shocked anymore, and yet each time, someone or something manages to out-do the last crazy thing I saw.
