SWEETS AND STUFF

I just need to share that I'm head over heels in love with Walker Hayes right now.  His music is amazing, he has the best sense of humor,  and really seems to be all about family.  Speaking of family, he and his wife are expecting their 7th child soon.

Are you caught up in the all the deliciousness of the season and still want more?  Here's a few recipes that are perfect for you or Santa and come from The Southern Cookie.

CHAI TEA EGGNOG COOKIES

INGREDIENTS
1 Chai Teabag
1 17.5 Oz. Package Sugar Cookie Mix
1/2 Cup Butter, Melted
1 Large Egg
4 Tbsp Eggnog, Divided
Parchment Paper
Cinnamon Sugar
1 Cup Powdered Sugar
1/2 Tsp freshly grated nutmeg, or the kind in a jar

INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees, remove the tea leaves from the tea bag, and throw away the bag.

Combine the tea leaves, cookie mix, butter, egg and 2 Tbsp Eggnog into a medium bowl, blending until combined.  Drop the dough by spoonfuls on the parchment lined baking sheets.  Flatten the dough slightly with the bottom of a glass dipped in cinnamon sugar.

Bake in batches for  8-10 minutes or until slightly browned.  Transfer to wire racks or a plate, and cool completely for about 10 minutes.  Whisk together the powdered sugar, nutmeg, and remaining 2 Tbsp eggnog  until smooth, then spoon over the cooled cookies.

CHOCOLATE-DIPPED PRALINE PRETZELS

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 Cups Coarsely Chopped Pecans
1/4 Cup Light Brown Sugar
2 Tbsp Heavy Cream
Butter
Parchment Paper
2 4-Oz Semisweet Chocolate Baking Bars, Chopped
16 Pretzel Rods

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 350 degrees, then combine pecans, brown sugar and cream in a medium bowl.
Spread mixture in a single layer in a lightly buttered -in round cake pan.  Bake for 20 minutes, or until the sugar is slightly crystallized, stirring once.  cool in pan for 10 minutes, then finely chop.  Spread mixture in a single layer on parchment paper.

Microwave the chocolate in a microwave safe measuring cup on HIGH for 1 minute or until melted, stirring at 15 second intervals.  Immediately dip 2/3 of the pretzel into the chocolate, twirling to cover all sides.  Then roll into the pecan mixture.  Gently place on parchment paper, allowing it to set.  These can be stored in airtight containers for up to 4 days.

CRACKERS
For some reason, I can never eat just one cracker.  Has that ever happened to you?  Nabisco released the saltine cracker in 1876 with the slogan, "Polly Wants a Cracker", but it didn't get really popular until The Great Depression.  How do those holes get in the cracker?  The super thin dough  is docked precisely to allow the steam to escape while baking, therefore creating that crispy cracker we've all come to know and love.

MAYBE YOU DON'T HAVE TO COUNT STEPS
If you live somewhere cold and want to rev up that metabolism from eating all those cookie, stand outside for just 15 minutes.  Doing this is the equivalent of 1 entire hour of exercise!!!!

BE CAREFUL
Clearing snow from the walkway/driveway is supposed to protect everyone from slipping as they head to your house for those cookies. According to recent studies, 11,000 people go to the emergency room because they get hurt while shoveling snow.  Just like lifting heavy objects, experts encourage us to use our legs instead of our backs.

Christmas Photos by Ken Cedeno/Verbatim Photo Agency
I really enjoy looking at Christmas decorations all over the country, and every year a special is shown on HGTV on how the White House decorates.  You can stream the show, or watch it On Demand.  It's really cool to see what 159 volunteers can create in one week of nonstop decorating.

Summer on Blossom Street-Debbie Macomber
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THIS?
A few weeks ago there was a paperback giveaway which I was thrilled about.  I went inside with my bag, prepared to load up on lots of goodies.  Imagine my surprise when I realized that all the paperbacks had no cover!!!  What in the heck?

Hardcore readers already know that the inside has a disclaimer that if the book was purchased without a cover, it's considered stolen property, and was reported as unsold.

This is what I'm used to seeing, and what I'm reading right now.
The books weren't being sold, so does that make the people who gave these away feel that it was okay to strip the cover? I'm super grateful for that giveaway, because I saved a ton of cash, and added to the ever growing pile.  It was also very kind. By the way, if you happen to pick up Summer on Blossom Street, which was published in 2009, the front of the book has instructions on how to knit a cable scarf.

If I purchase a book, or one is given to me, I'm pretty much expecting an intact book, which includes the cover.  So really I'm wondering if anyone has ever experienced this, and if it means something special that I'm missing?

  1. OMGosh. What a post. FIRST, I take exception with the Chai recipe. It reads "throw the bag away." Hardcore altered artists know that bag is PRICELESS, just like any good paper. It can be drawn on, stamped on, sewn on, and the list goes on. Obviously the person who created the cookie recipe was not a TRUE artist!

When I was in CA one year, I searched for saltines. I was at Trader Joe's and Whole Foods and NEITHER of these places sold the lowly, yet tasty saltine cracker. Everyone I asked wanted me to buy some fancy crackers with lots of shapes or lots of different ingredients. How hard could it be to get a good old fashioned cracker? Pretty hard in CA, I guess.

I missed out on the White House Christmas special this year. I haven't watched HGTV since they stopped having crafts.

I don't buy many books, except at book sales, but I know you want the entire book, including the cover. There's often great art on the covers.

Hope your day is merry and bright.

    1. That's pretty interesting about the teabag, Elizabeth! I'll bet lots of people don't realize that. I've got tons and tons of boxes of Lipton Tea, and need to save those bags for you for sure. Wow, no saltines in Trader Joe's or Whole Foods in CA? What in the world is going on? HGTV sure has changed over the years, right? You're right, covers often tell a unique story. Hope things are going well in your world! Hugs...RO

  2. I'll have to give his music a listen. Wow, number 7!

I'm not a chai or eggnog person, but neat recipe for the holidays. I'll have to stick to the praline dip pretzels and yes, for Saltines. :)

I've not watched the White House decorating, but I do enjoy that sort of thing.

Huh, not sure why one would rip off the cover if their just giving it away. Maybe they got them that way. I guess as long as they're not trying to sell them its okay. I give away ARCs to people I think will read and offer another review for them.

Neat post as always, Radiant Ro!

    1. When I saw this guy walk out on stage at The Talk, I literally felt myself swooning. Then he spoke and had this amazing sense of humor, and seemed like he had no clue he was so good looking. Then when he talked about his family, I was all in. His music is so amazing! Can you tell I'm gushing.(lol) Isn't that crazy that most of us can't eat just one cracker? The cover thing is super strange. Hugs...RO

As for the covers, that's really weird. Are they finished copies without a cover, or ARCs? I could see someone taking the ARC cover off because it says ARC, but otherwise, that's a bit odd. Ah well.

  18. Hi RO :) Delicious recipes! We were having egg nog on Monday while we decorated the tree...brandy and rum added of course! Then a good nap lol...It could be the manufacturer here in my area, but the last time I bought saltines was nearly a year ago and they were all burned. It's a shame because I used to love those crackers with a little butter on top! :) As for the books, no clue. I have never bought a book without a cover before and I'd be wondering what the heck too...a good book NEEDS a cover, it's all part of the experience of reading it!

    2. Yes, I wrote to the company and they sent me a $10 coupon. Then I used the coupon to buy another one of their crackers (Cheese Nips) and THOSE WERE BURNED TOO. They smelled like a chimney. The company ignored my second complaint so I took it to the Food Inspection Agency Canada department. They even sent a representative here to my home to pick up the crackers for further investigation!! I have no clue what happened, that was last spring. But the lady told me it could take up to a year and they'd send me the results when they have them. I haven't bought a crackers since!

    3. I eat Cheese Nips a lot, and the fact that you received burned coupons again is horrible. And to not hear anything from last Spring is even worse. Perhaps a blog post is in order on this matter and sending them a copy? I don't blame you and wouldn't eat again either. I'm so sorry Rain!

  20. standing out in the cold as a form of exercise? it doesn't sound so bad. do you just stand there or are you allow to move? at least, it is slightly better than torturing yourself with those gym machines. just slightly, but not much.

book with no cover? I'm going have to say no to that. it doesn't make any sense to me. I have yet to get such book so I have no idea why that is.

  26. Hello, my name is RITA CARMEN and I have been trying to get pregnant for over 12 years. i have been looking for ways online for so long, I first did Depo Provera Shot which i consecutively took every three months in order to get pregnant or fertile, but there was no way from it. I did Depo shot for 3 years constantly until my Doctors in Australia told me to try IVF because I had Endometriosis stage 4 and I resulted to try IVF (In Vitro Fertilization). For months after my IVF no progressed and my situation became worse that my husband had already had plans or getting married to another woman because I was barren. I read a testimony about Prophet Abulele how he had helped so many women with pregnancy problems and also how he usually casts return spells to bring back partner and make one fertile. Of all options tried, I gave Prophet Abulele a try. I am now a mother of a baby boy. For over 13 years of my marriage I received my help from this spell caster. I want to impact on someone's life and make the person get help from a good spell caster. Prophet Abulele's email is:- prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com and his WhatsApp is +2349022406159 once you contact him, he will help you fast.

  27. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
