FRIDAY USELESS STUFF

Do you play board games at your house?  Do you consider yourself an expert when it comes to playing Scrabble?  The game has been around since the 1930's and I thought I was good, until I met this guy who kicks my butt every single time. In 7 years, I came close to winning just once.   I think he's pretty much memorized the entire Scrabble Player Dictionary, but he swears he hasn't.  I just wanna know how in the world he knowS words like "aa" and "zuz" for Pete's sake? (lol)

$1425!
Anywho, Saturday April 13 is National Scrabble Day. If you're a hardcore collector and want to have something that friends will talk about for years, grab the leather edition from Aspinal of London for a mere $1,425.00.  I'll just brag and say that my game cost just $2.00 from a yard sale a few years ago. If you really want to impress someone, AND score 1782 points, be sure to use all the right strategies and spell out OXYPHENBUTAZONE.

No one loves Harry Potter more than my Blogger Bud Lauren over at https://shootingstarsmag.net, and she has all kinds of memorabilia to prove it. You'll also see mentions on her Instagram, and Facebook pages of this beloved character. So I wouldn't be surprised at all if she looked around her house and had 1 of the 500 original copies of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone from 1997. What makes them so special are the misspellings of  philosopher on the back cover, and Harry's wand is typed in twice on his school supply list.

This first edition recently sold for almost $100,000 in London!  If you're interested in purchasing a set actually signed by the author, check out ebay where the going rate is currently close to $17,600. According to JK Rowling, more than 500 million Harry Potter novels have been sold in various languages around the world.

Did you know that Monaco has a 0% unemployment rate, and there are no poor people living there.  They also have very little crime.  Despite being considered a gambling mecca, residents are not allowed to gamble, nor can they even go into a casino unless they work there.  Tourists are always welcome, however. Never Say Never Again and Golden Eye are two of the movies filmed there.

Humans aren't the only ones who can get DNA tests these days.  If you want to know everything there is to know about your beloved pup, check out www.embarkvet.com for about $200.  You'll get the results within a month or so.  For about $70, you can also grab www.dnamydog.com, and get your details within 2 weeks, but it's not as extensive.

Are you a fan of birds and want to get them out of shelters where they could eventually be put down?  Adoptabirdnetwork.com is a nonprofit agency that specializes in placing chickens and birds in safe, no-kill environments. It's easily set up by age, city and species.  www.adoptabirdnetwork.com

During the mid 19th century, Oregon was the go to state for gold,
but once all those mines dried up, people left for greener pastures, making it the state with the most ghost towns in the US with a total of 250.

If you like living in small towns, Okay, OK has a population of about 620 people.

Transfer, cut side up, to plates.Serve topped with ice cream and caramel corn.
The son of her husband's family showing up to a couple's black tie optional wedding wearing military formal wear including all his medals, caused a bride to lose it.  This Marine was mannerly and friendly, and many people wanted to take pictures with him.
The bride said that she had nothing against those in the military, but felt that wearing his uniform was a way for him to show off and steal the spotlight on her special day.  In frustration, she asked him to leave the wedding.  This scenario caused close to 1800 comments on Reddit before the moderators finally cut off any new responses. Let's just say that things got heated!

Do you think he was showing off?  Did she overreact?  Did he make a mistake?  Was she the star of her wedding?

I've driven through Monaco, didn't go to the Casino either as we were in a camping van trip around Europe and didn't have fancy clothes. They don't allow camping vans or caravans to stay in Monaco overnight either, it's certainly not the place for the those that aren't wealthy :)

  4. Many Asian countries have casinos not available to local people. It is quite hypocritical.

Don't get personal DNA tests but by all means get pet DNA. The results will probably tell you why not to get personal DNA tests. Many strange things happen in this world, now and in the last century.

The military man was a show off and behaved badly. Nevertheless, she should have ignored him and shone in her own light. Banning him makes her look bad. Ignoring him would have been her best choice. She was a very silly person.

As far as the bride goes...I believe that she went overboard. It wasn't just her wedding it was the groom's wedding, too. I am sure that she still had many eyes upon her and if this is what getting married is all about than she should be happy.
I don't feel that the Marine did anything wrong. He had a right to wear his uniform and proudly.

  18. I've played Scrabble a few times, but am mediocre at best against the people I played. I do love learning new words through playing. :) I wouldn't say I'm really good at any board game, but I do love to play when friends or family pull one out.
Interesting about Monaco residents, but it makes sense if you don't want a bunch of people addicted or busted and living off the state. LOL And, as small as the place is maybe people from other nearby countries like France have jobs there and can still gamble since they're not residents.
I'm not exactly a bird person, but I would probably adopt one to save it from being put down. I did it with a hamster and I'm not really a hamster person, either.
I'm curious whether I'd like your cooked bananas in the banana split, but I'd give it a go.
Neat on the largest amount of ghost towns in Oregon. I'll have to pass that on to my dad. He loves looking at ghost towns. Funny about the Okay, OK town. That would get confusing whether I was talking about my town or the state initials. LOL
That is too bad about the fracas the bride caused at her own wedding. Not knowing the guy, I have no idea what his motives were, but growing up military and in a big military town, I suspect it wasn't what she thought. I had nearly fifty people at my wedding in uniform and it was to honor our because my mom was their boss. I confess that I probably didn't think much about it since I'm used to seeing people in uniform every day and dress uniform for special occasions. I thought it was great (then again, I really don't like being the star attraction so there is that). ;)

Have a great weekend, Radiant Ro!

Now about the solider I come from a many in the military family and even though I don't know the solider personally I really doubt he was showing off, wearing his dress blues was in fact like a civilian showing up in a tux and any soldier who has earned any medal and wears them to an event to show off doesn't deserve them. Yes okay I agree Bridezilla is the star of the show but she needed to put her big girl panties on and get over herself. What a brat! 1. LOL! What I found interesting is that most of the comments agreed with it being her special day, and they even suggested pulling the young man aside to discuss the matter. Where most people had a problem was her kicking him out, and felt that she was rude and drew even more attention to the matter. I thought it was strange that no one would have thought the young man was embarrassed over the incident. As a vet who's pretty laid back, he could have worn a clown suit, or come dressed as Columbo and I would have laughed and happily said "I do" to the groom(lol) Hugs...RO

      Delete
  26. Oh, good grief, that bride needs to get over herself. Since I don't know the Marine, I don't know if he was showing off, but I doubt it. "Black tie optional" means you can wear black tie (i.e., formal attire), but aren't absolutely required to. (It does suggest at least a suit and tie.) Formal dress equivalent for a Marine is... formal uniform with medals and a black tie. So he was appropriately dressed for the occasion. Perhaps he should have turned down requests for photos with him, since the focus should have been on the bride and groom (not just the bride, whatever she may think.) But for the bride to disinvite him was rude and unmannerly.

As for board games, I love them. And I'm good at word games, but not at Scrabble; it requires strategic thinking, and that's not my strong suit. I can come up with great words, but I can't plan out how to block people or get the most points from the tiles I have. I prefer Boggle or Upwords.

  33. I saw the story about the Marine at the wedding and I must admit I rolled my eyes a bit about the bride's crankiness. But then I'm not really a big wedding person. I do understand it's not necessarily protocol to wear a uniform to a civilian wedding but does anything really look as good as a Marine dress uniform? Also I wonder if the Marine in question owns a suit? I know lots of men who don't and an enlisted Marine isn't making all that much - especially not enough to spend a chunk of cash on a suit he might only wear once. Monaco is so gorgeous and how interesting that the locals aren't allowed in the casinos!

Monaco is definitely a gorgeous place to visit. They don't want locals there to lose money gambling, eventually causing them to not be able to pay bills or the upkeep of their homes. 1. It's hard to say, and he may not have had a suit. I think kicking him out spoke to her character in a big way. How romantic that you eloped! Would love to hear more about that.(lol) Hugs...RO

  39. I never played Scrabble a lot, but I still remember how my grandparents always had it lying around and played it sometimes there. That's interesting Monaco has a 0% unemployment rate. And I didn't realize they had DNA tests for dogs now too. Those bruleed banana's sure sound good!

    1. Monaco truly has wealthy people and it's so tiny. I don't play as much as I used to, but I still enjoy Scrabble when I can. Hope you're doing well! Hugs...RO

    1. LOL! You are not alone because I have another blogger friend who never read the books or watched the movie, and a friend who used to own a consignment store who barely picks up any type of book to read. But if I have a question about anything in the Bible, she's definitely my go to girl! I did sneak in a few bites of chocolate Super Sandra! Hugs...RO

  43. I love that Monaco has 0% unemployment. Is it a socialist state? Do all the citizens get a portion of the 'winnings'?
Happy Terrific Tuesday to you, my friend.

    1. Most of the money that goes there is based on the tourists who come in not only to gamble, but to stay in the luxury hotels, and eating in all those rich restaurants and the Grand Prix. I'm not sure, but I think it's considered a monacharchy when it comes to their government. Of the 38,000 people who can afford to even live there(lol), 1 in 3 is considered a millionaire. Wouldn't it be nice if they all got a portion of all those winnings?(lol) Hugs...RO

  45. When I taught 5th grade we had parents come in once a month on Fridays to play Scrabble with groups of kids. It was such fun and helped the kiddos build their vocabularies and works on their spelling. Back then I had a lot of the 2 letter words allowed by Scrabble memorized, as well as a lot of obscure words that kids would try to use and were sometimes allowed (we didn't "challenge" until the end of the year- so if a kid used a word it could be checked and if it wasn't a word they would take it off and put a different word). I used to play a lot and really enjoyed it, but I haven't played in a while. I will have to play again soon. :)

    Interesting about Moraco!

    Have a great weekend!

    1. Wow! That's a really great idea, and a great way to learn new words. I wish I would have thought of that when my son was a kid. It would be wonderful to see if teachers can implement this into their lesson plans these days. I hope you get a chance to play one day soon. Have a super weekend! Hugs...RO

  47. I have used spell casting to get my ex wife back to me and also she got pregnant with twins through the help of a great and trusted spell caster. When I came online last year, I met a testimony about Prophet Abulele who has been helping people and I decided to contact him. We spoke on email at prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com and he said he would also help me get DIANA back in three days after 3 years of no contact and also he told me he send me some herbs to make her get pregnant for me. You know when your spouse leaves you; you feel your whole world start crumbling down. There is nothing that seems right anymore. When I met Prophet Abulele, he is the best spell caster I must say. My wife called me after 3days and when I received herbal medicine for fertility, she became fertile. I and my wife reconnected, had sex and she became pregnant. I am happy today to be the father of twin’s girls and this is ALL THANKS TO Prophet Abulele. If you need help, you are saved with this spell caster, contact his email at prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com or directly on whats App him +2349022406159 and you too will give a testimony too to help others.
