COOL CAKES & TRIVIA

I'm woefully behind on responding to messages and posts, but am catching back up...slowly.

Meanwhile, what better reason to celebrate eating cake than Halloween!

All the way back in 1811, Jane Austen's very first novel, Sense and Sensibility was sold in bookstores, and in no time it sold out.  When we look at all those reprints, we know she's the author , but all six of the books she wrote had one thing in common.  Do you know what that was?

If you guessed that none of those classic novels included her actual name, go to the head of the class.  Sense and Sensibility was written by The Lady, and the credit for Pride & Prejudice just said, "By the Author of Sense and Sensibility".

By the way, if you're interested in getting a rare first edition of Mansfield Park,  where 18 people are currently watching this auction, head over to eBay here.

If you celebrate Halloween, and plan to get your groove on at lots of parties to show off your costumes, please Be Safe.  If not, what a great opportunity to bake a cake, grab some candy, or eat a cheeseburger and relax at home with a book or a movie.

    7. Those cakes look incredible. Sadly Jane Austen wasn't alone in having to conceal her identity. Women have been undervalued for way tooooo long.

    11. I seem to be even MORE woefully behind than you. I truly love the cakes you shared with us. The certainly were very Halloween spirited.

I would have been by sooner, but I passed out pencils to tricksters tonight. I had more kids than ever before, which surprised me. After I passed out 96 pencils, I turned out the porch light about 10ish. I sort of wish I'd stayed in and taken in a movie, like you. Happy belated Halloween.

      1. Wow Elizabeth, that's a lot of kids, so I can imagine you were exhausted! What I love more than anything is that you gave out something that kids can really use, won't cause a sugar rush, and is safe. Kudos to you! Hugs...RO

    12. Not shocked, even today some authors use initials to hide the fact that they are a woman like it actually matters anymore

      ReplyDelete
      Replies
      1. I agree, no need to hide something like that these days for sure. What I come across are the women who write BDSM or other erotic masterpieces, and use a pseudonym in order to maintain the privacy of their lives. I met an author once who was dating a well known politician, and was always very careful that her real name didn't get out. Hugs...RO

    15. We didn't do anything Halloweenish this year except for hand out stuff to the kids. I decided to switch it up and hand out comic books and glow bracelets. That was about as crazy as I got this year. Ha!

    16. Happy Halloween RO! :) I'm woefully behind as well. Sometimes I decide just not to answer comments and go on to the next post and I feel like I've caught up! :) Hope you had a nice cheeseburger if you stayed home! It was pizza night for us :) Interesting about Jane Austen!

    17. What fabulous cakes. I like that chocolate one that hides the psychedelic swirl inside just waiting to be discovered when you cut into it.

Oh woohoo, love seeing my favorite authoress, A Lady, getting to be part of your post. :)

I curled up with some mac n' cheese and then had some Reeses cups with my Halloween read last night. We had snow flurries so I actually got no trick or treaters- they all went to the town party at the gym. ;)

      1. I remembered how much you love Jane Austen, and thought I'd surprise you. (lol) What really intrigued me is that 18 people are watching this auction with the intent of possibly paying $10,000 for an original piece from her collection. I'm a cheese lover, so I am smiling as I picture your meal. Nothing is ever wrong with Reeses Cups. (lol) Wow! Snow already?! Glad you were able to relax with a good book. Hugs...and Happy Friday!

    19. A cheeseburger sounds good! And those cakes look YUMMMMMY. 20 years or so ago, I was told chili was the traditional Halloween food. Have no idea if that's true or not. I think maybe some people make their first pot of chili of the winter on Halloween, but I make it year round! Anyway, all that to say we had chili last night!

    21. Great trivia on Jane Austen. I had no idea her books didn't bear her name when first published. How interesting! Probably because it wasn't the done thing for women to publish books back then.

      1. I really love finding out about all the useless trivia behind the scenes for some strange reason. (lol) Times sure have changed, and thank goodness women feel comfy using their own names as authors these days. Hugs...RO

    22. Just saw your question and comment on my altered books. I'm not sure about the Asian AB, but the Time AB took 25 days. I must have worked on it day and night. The Money AB took nearly a year to complete.

    23. Hi Ro - I have to admit if I'd eaten too much of the cakes on offer ... I'd be rather unwell too - and definitely need to sleep to work them all off!! I did know about Jane Austen ... and I'm certain there's a huge interest in her works today two hundred years after her death. Cheers Hilary

    25. I love the pumpkin cake with the spiders! Very creepy. That's really interesting about Jane. I knew some of her books were By a Lady but I didn't realize she never used her name. I need to read Sense and Sensibility. Somehow I never managed to read that one.

    27. I have used spell casting to get my ex wife back to me and also she got pregnant with twins through the help of a great and trusted spell caster. When I came online last year, I met a testimony about Prophet Abulele who has been helping people and I decided to contact him. We spoke on email at prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com and he said he would also help me get DIANA back in three days after 3 years of no contact and also he told me he send me some herbs to make her get pregnant for me. You know when your spouse leaves you; you feel your whole world start crumbling down. There is nothing that seems right anymore. When I met Prophet Abulele, he is the best spell caster I must say. My wife called me after 3days and when I received herbal medicine for fertility, she became fertile. I and my wife reconnected, had sex and she became pregnant. I am happy today to be the father of twin’s girls and this is ALL THANKS TO Prophet Abulele. If you need help, you are saved with this spell caster, contact his email at prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com or directly on whats App him +2349022406159 and you too will give a testimony too to help others.

    28. I was diagnosed as HEPATITIS B carrier in 2013 with fibrosis of the
liver already present. I started on antiviral medications which
reduced the viral load initially. After a couple of years the virus
became resistant. I started on HEPATITIS B Herbal treatment from
ULTIMATE LIFE CLINIC (www.ultimatelifeclinic.com) in March, 2020. Their
treatment totally reversed the virus. I did another blood test after
the 6 months long treatment and tested negative to the virus. Amazing
treatment! This treatment is a breakthrough for all HBV carriers.
