ARE YOU JUDGED BY WHAT YOU READ?

Whatever happened to sitting on the couch to show off your photo albums?  As this guy was checking out in Walmart the other day, I noticed he was grinning from ear and doing his best to impress the girl in front of me who was next in line.  She had a 5 year old son, and his daughter was 4. He suggested that her son meet his daughter for a playdate, possibly setting the scene for marriage in the future.
Then, despite the cashier trying to move things along, he pulled out his phone and scrolled through pictures of his daughter, paying no attention to the growing line of people who were loudly getting pretty fed up while he chatted(lol).  After all that - he left the store without her phone number. Yikes!

DO PEOPLE JUDGE YOU BY  THE BOOKS ON YOUR SHELVES?
Planner with cool stickers from my buddy and artistic blogger Elizabeth

Yep, sometimes this Planner hangs out in my bookcase

If you would have walked into my home about 35 years ago, you may have been amazed at the massive amount of romance novels on my bookcases, mixed in with a little nonfiction.  Fast forward to 2018, and there's good mix of thrillers, erotic romance, nonfiction, and cookbooks on display.
In addition, I carry books everywhere I go.  Despite what I read these days, people draw these crazy conclusions about my life.  I'm a hermit who never leaves the house, I'm a geek, I want to be a spy, I'm a sex fiend, I don't have time to watch television, I'm a gourmet chef, I must have studied to be a doctor, and goodness knows what else!(lol) To be honest, I just read stuff that I like and find interesting. Do people make assumptions about you based on what you read?

GRAB THIS NOW
Summer may be almost over, but the temperatures in some places is still pretty brutal, so that's why this hat is a must!
The smaller version of this Palapa Hat is about $350 from Nordstrom, but why not go all out and get the $6,500.00 version from the design team of Olmos & Flores, and stay extra shady?

FUN TRIVIA
Technically, Gilligan's Island aired its final episode in September 1967 without being rescued. They made it off the island in 1978, but were stranded again by the end of the show.  Then in 1979 on The Castaways of Gilligan's Island, made it off the island again, until they decided to return by choice at the end of that movie.  Can you believe that the Coast Guard was regularly contacted to rescue the 7 actors?
Mary Poppins is one those movies I can watch over and over again, but did you know it won 5 Oscars?  They include Best Actress, Best Editing, Best Original Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Original Song(Chim Chim Cher-ee), and is the only Disney movie to have won this many awards.  By the way, the remake will be released in theaters on December 19, 2018 with Emily Blunt.

Who comes in second with 3 awards?  Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

YUMMY, YUMMY
Did you know that women have more tastebuds than men? According to a Yale study, 35% of women vs 15% men are considered supertasters because they can actually identify sweet, sour or salty flavors better than most other people.

CHOCOLATE STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE - David Venable

INGREDIENTS
  • 1
    package chocolate fudge cake mix
  • 3/4
    cup water
  • 1/4
    cup vegetable oil
  • 3
    egg whites
  • 1
    (6-ounce) container strawberry yogurt
  • 2
quarts fresh strawberries, hulled and sliced
  • 1
(16-ounces) container whipped cream or fresh whipped cream
  • 4
    ounces mini chocolate chips

    DIRECTIONS
Heat the oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a rectangular baking pan

Beat cake mix, water, oil, egg whites, and yogurt in a large bowl on low speed for 30 seconds. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes. Pour into the greased pan. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until cake springs back when touched lightly in the center. Cool completely. Turn cake out onto a cutting board. Cut in half horizontally, and place the bottom layer on a trivet. Frost the cake with whipped cream and then scatter sliced strawberries on top. Place second layer of cake on top and repeat layering with whipped cream and sliced strawberries.
Garnish with a sprinkle of mini chocolate chips on top of the strawberries. Yum!

If you want to cheat, or don't have the time, purchase a chocolate pound cake and cut it into layers instead.

Books! I see this word and right away my attention is caught! I am a true bibliophile! I love to collect books and yes, I do read them, too! No...I honestly do not believe that anyone could figure me out by what books are on my library shelves. Fiction, non-fiction, travel, paranormal, biographies, how-to, poetry, cooking, crafts, art, new books, old books, used books...well, you get the idea :) Each book represents a piece of who I am. Put them all together and you have me.

  6. I always love these posts.
Now lets flash back to when B&N had all those fab book clubs, believe it or not I used to moderate the General Fiction book club for them and let me tell you I had some real book snobs in my group. If you even mentioned Harlequin you were shunned. We always did a group read every couple of months where the author would show up and contribute to the read (I've continued that on my Goodreads club and the fab JT Ellison will be with us in late September for her latest thriller) So one of the books I chose was published by Mira and book snobs aren't always real smart so they didn't realize Mira was an imprint of, that's right, Harlequin. I actually changed some of their attitudes and I lost one member who was insulted that I forced her to read "trash", but she was probably really mad at herself for liking it.
That recipe looks good but I gave up bread and sugar .

    Thanks RO xo

  8. I read everything too!

But being older, and having tried to get rid of excess stuff in our home, I don't have representations of all I have read, on my current shelves.

So if people judged me, by my present book shelves, they'd not get the full picture. :-)

But then, I don't think book shelves, or many other "ways," actually paint the whole picture of a person, anyway.

One side holds all my math books (YES, I'm a geek), one side holds all my statistics and human factors books (I try to stay current), and one has fiction, mostly mysteries, but some book like Cosmos has found its way into that bookcase, too. So glad to see your planner in use. That makes me happy. PLEASE read the first line under "Yummy, Yummy." It doesn't make sense to me.

Mary Poppins is a gem. I was aware of those Oscars. I recently saw a show where Disney told his favorite song from the movie was Feed the Birds.

BTW, remember the family who set up a gofundme page for this homeless guy who gave the woman his last $20.00 because she forgot her purse and couldn't pay for her gas? WELL, the husband and wife are now being investigated and today they were served with a search warrant because the homeless man didn't receive the money (a bit over $407, 000.00) others had funded him. Seems the husband and wife have a new car, and have taken expensive vacations where they can't explain how they paid for them. The web site is working on getting the man the money he is owed. The husband and wife's excuse? They were afraid he would buy drugs with the money. No good deed goes unpunished.

BTW, I drink French Roast and I grind it myself. Saved an e-mail, which I hate writing!

    3. LOL! I appreciate so much that you let me know. I'm already working on Christmas gifts and trying to get ideas. I've been watching the news on this every single day, and yesterday they confiscated that BMW that was purchased! The couple texted the man and asked him to get rid of his lawyer, and they would get rid of their lawyers and write him a check. It saddens me that this man may in fact have a drug addition, but the people who donated all that money wanted him to thrive and to have it himself. The couple claim that they were managing the money because he's an addict. I mean who can this man once again be homeless on the streets right now??? This whole thing has me quite upset, and it really saddens me so much! You already know I'll be watching for the outcome.(lol) Sure hope your Friday is as amazing as you are! Hugs...RO

I mean, it might show what they find interesting, but that's about it. Reading a lot doesn't mean you do nothing but read. Reading romance doesn't mean you're a ditz or should read "real" books and even reading classics all the time doesn't mean much of anything! LOL

  31. I've been judged not only by what I read, but even based on the format in which I'm reading it. As a child, I was "weird" for reading so much SFF. As an adult, I've been sneered at for reading romance by both men and women (though more often by men.) I've even had a guy on a plane assume, in a patronizing manner, that I was reading romance because I was reading on my Kindle. As it happened, I was reading an advanced review copy of a historical mystery in order to review it for my blog; that shut him up. But I wish I'd had the courage to say all the things I was thinking: "Why do you assume that a woman reading an ebook is reading romance? Why do you sound so patronizing about women reading romances? Have you ever read one? Is it possible that your opinion of romances might be sexist?" Oh, I was FUMING inside! But I didn't say anything. I still wish I had.

Oh, and for the record, I read widely: everything from picture books to adult novels, and while I read mostly fantasy, mystery (contemporary and historical), and romance and romantic suspense (contemporary and historical), I also read science fiction, historical fiction, general or literary fiction, and the occasional classic. And my job entails reading scholarly nonfiction books on everything from history to social or political science to science and medicine, analyzing the text, and producing an index for it. So I get really riled up when people make assumptions about my intelligence or interests because of one book they see me reading, or even because of what's on my bookshelves in the public rooms of my house.

    1. That's the pits that you got stuck beside such an ****ole!(lol) Then he had the nerve to look at your ebook, and start a crazy conversation about what he assumed you were reading and why! That's just crazy to me. I don't get why people make all these false assumptions about romance either. It's always cool to hear about other readers who are doing their thing with whatever they're reading, and whatever is on their shelves. HUGE Hugs and Happy Tuesday! RO

  32. I have hundreds of books that I can't part with even though I won't read most of them again...I read all sorts too, from romantic novels, historical novels, cook books and lately I've been reading a lot of alternative medicine books. I loved Detective Colombo too.

    1. That's so true. I find it hard to part with any of the books in my collection as well. Some I read again, but more often than not, I just love having the books around. Yay for Columbo! Happy Tuesday and Hugs...RO

    1. I found some really cool desserts at Aldi's the other day, and once again, I'm not supposed to eat any of it(lol). They tried to hide them from me up front in a strange place, but if you go into one near you, there are some great ones to stock up on for the holidays. That was a really, really good looking guy, and his smile was pretty amazing. She wasn't wearing a ring, but I have a sneaky suspicion that she was in a relationship. I'm not judged as much, but as a kid there were a few raised eyebrows and weird comments(lol) At my age, I'm like you and don't really care what people are thinking about my library. Happy Tuesday!

  37. I do think people judge me by the books I read- but I don't care. Like you- I read what I want to read. I go through phases of reading different kinds of book. I read a lot of romance in my 20s- but only read it rarely now. I do love when I see books I might not expect on someone else's shelf- I think it makes them more interesting. :)

I can't believe people called the Coast Guard about the Castaways! Wow!

Mary Poppins is one of my favorites.

    Have a lovely week!

  38. I think the only time I've really been judged based on what I read is when people see me reading sci fi or fantasy. I've had people imply that I'm weird for liking those genres, but I don't care. As far as I'm concerned, they're the ones missing out if they're not reading, lol.

    1. it seems like every genre makes people assume about our characters, romance, sci-fi, BDSM, Westerns, paranormal...the list goes on. Some are fun to hear, but ultimately as readers, we're going to continue to read what we like, right?(lol) And yes, a few people are missing out on lots of treasures. Happy Tuesday and Hugs! RO

  43. Very few people see my bookshelves, but those in the know would likely be impressed by my home library. I have an eclectic collection with a wide range of subject matter. When I visit somebody and I see books on display, that will be one of the first places I take a look at. I enjoy perusing another person's library and what their books can tell be something if not a lot about that person.

  52. I`m Christopher Daniel, Please contact this amazing pregnancy spell caster Prophet Abulele Who help my wife to get pregnant, this is his email address ( prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com), So me and my wife have been trying for a baby for the last 6 years now and we have had no luck. My wife don't have a regular cycle so it is hard for her to tell when she's ovulating or not, but we always have sex at least 4 times a week, sometimes more. I know it can take up to a year to conceive but everyone I know who have had a baby have conceived within 2-3months of trying and it is really getting to me. I had a fertility test about a year ago and my sperm were fine. So I was thinking it could be a problem with my wife but she never had any symptoms of any problems. I do smoke and I only drink occasional, and she use to smoke and also have the occasional drink. I know she's slightly overweight but that shouldn't affect her chances too much, one faithful day my friend told me to contact a man called Prophet Abulele that help her aunty get pregnant, then I contact the man on this email:prophetabulelehealingtemple@gmail.com OR WhatsApp him on +2349022406159 and follow his instruction, after three months the doctor confirm that my wife is pregnant thank you Prophet Abulele for helping me get a baby am now a proud father of twins a boy and a girl.
