DO YOU JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER?

When looking for new books in the store, on-line or in the library, my initial reaction is to notice the title, then the cover.  After that, I'll check out the name of the author, the blurb and reviews.  I also pay attention to the reviews and opinions of other bloggers who specialize in a specific genre

Sometimes this process works well, but I've run across a few clunkers occasionally.

I've found that many books with less than desireable covers are actually fantastic reads, or sometimes the blurb may not convey the entire story.

Anywho, how do you choose your books?  Are you naturally drawn to the cover?  Have you ever run across a book that you enjoyed and it had no cover at all? Does it matter?

JUST ONE MORE THING
Here's a super simple recipe that will get you out that kitchen in minutes and your kids will love how it tastes.

Microwave a stack of frozen pancakes
Cook about 12 pieces of bacon
Put pieces of bacon in between the pancakes - 4 is a good number
Add your favorite syrup and breakfast is done!

You can modify this recipe by cooking pancakes and adding your choice of fruits or nuts in the batter.

Enjoy!

  1. Oh, yes!!! I am drawn to a book with an interesting cover. Then I also check the reviews and I will skim through a few pages. If it still holds my interest then I will probably buy it and take it home. I buy many of my books at thrift stores, garage sales and used book stores, so I feel it's worth a couple dollars if the book turns out to be a keeper. If I am truly sorry that I bought it, I will donate it back to a thrift store. As they say "you can't judge a book by its cover" but that doesn't stop me from picking it up to browse through its pages :)

    1. I used to read a few of the pages a while back, but if I was already reading another book, I just confused myself (lol), so I stopped doing that. Years ago when I have sooooo many, I ended up giving a lot away, but I've been finding lately that I've wanted to reconnect with old friends so they were back on my shelf. Most of these include Rosemary Rogers and Kathleen Woodiwiss, because I consider them such classics. Back in the day, they were simply amazing! Hugs...

  2. The first thing I look at is the cover especially in book stores. Then the title and then the back blurb. If I'm online I always look at reviews.

    1. My go to places in person are Barnes and Noble, Walmart and Kroger, where I look for new releases from certain authors at first. Then I focus on the covers for new to me authors. Like you, I'm really paying attention to what book reviewers are saying. Hugs...

  3. The first thing I look at is the title, then the cover, author, and read the blurb. You also just gave me a craving for pancakes (smile!). Thanks for the post.

    1. lol - you're funny Angela! Ironically, I'm not a huge fan of pancakes unless they have some type of fruit in them like strawberries or peaches. Even then, I only want no more than 2. My topping is usually lemon curd or strawberry jam. Don't use a lot of syrup, but hubby is a fan of it. He can eat stacks and stacks of them.. The title is a biggie. I agree. You never know what can get a reader's attention. Happy Saturday! Hugs...

  4. In a bookstore, yes, it is the cover that grabs my eye first if the book is facing me. On the shelf where I just see its spine, then its the title and author. Now online, that is generally reviews and blurbs.

I actually have read many books without ever seeing the cover b/c many of my review ARCs come that way.

Now I want pancakes and bacon!

    1. That makes sense Sophia about the books on the shelf. Online, definitely important to see those reviews and a sneak peek of the storyline. Everything goes well with bacon! Yay! Hugs...

  5. I AM HUNGRY NOW. (thanks a lot RO!) hehe Nah, but to answer your lovely question, hmmm I sometimes judge a book by its cover only to find later that a certain blogger I respect/admire has rated it and LOVED it, which makes me take a second look at the book that I may have passed up had I not read the review. (I don't do this anymore because I've learned my lesson) Even though there's some readers that still do it which is why its's important to make sure the cover is appealing and things. ;) Lovely, awesome post (that also made me hungry but I'm still watching what I eat so... I shan't. *Stomps off to eat stupid green stuff* A.K.A. A sal-ad.

    1. Why in the heck are you dieting?(lol) You're fantabulously gorgeous! Anywho, when a lot of people are raving about a novel that I've never heard of, I'll generally go ahead and take a peek for my pile. But I've found that covers over the years have evolved and may not actually give a true picture of the masterpiece inside, so I try to check out all avenues when I can. Hugs...

  6. It would be a lie if I said I didn't. The Cover + Title are the first things that draw me to a book in a book store. How can I not judge a book by it's cover? :)

    1. Agreed, I think they all can grab our attention immediately, but there have been some times where I delve into the blurb and wonder if it's the same book. (lol) Covers are definitely changing from what they used to be years ago, and can be more edgy or thought-provoking. Big Hugs...

  7. I always look at the covers but I've quickly learned some of the more glitzy covers can hold horrible stories. I just now count on reviews an go for it. Hugs hun.

    1. You're so right about, Lovely Lanie. I've found that some covers have absolutely nothing to do with the book, so I have to make sure to read the blurb. If it's really new to me, I like to pay attention to the reviews, as well. Hugs...

  8. these days, I judge books more on the covers plus reading excerpts and reviews, of course, none of these methods is all that great because when you like a book, you like it, when you don't, you don't. there's really no real method to judge a book except reading the book but I suppose it's a good thing there's such thing as a library or else we all end up with piles of books we do not want to finish.

hope you have a lovely day.

    1. LOL - So true about the library and being able to give back the books we don't particularly care for. You're so right, there are definitely different methods that work for each individual, but it's all about how we feel once we're all done. Big Hugs and thanks for stopping by! Ro

  9. Yes, the cover calls me over and then the synopsis will either seduce me or send me running.

  10. I actually don't really pay attention to covers all that much, Ro, and to be honest, I mostly get my book recommendations on blogs, so of course, if someone else points out that a cover is gorgeous (or if it is very different) I will notice it, too.
And I agree, the synopsis is not always completely truthful.

    1. Good point, Lexxie. Sometimes I notice the cover, but I think I have a tendency to notice if it doesn't match the story , is unusual, or like you, someone points it out. Definitely hit and miss with the synopsis. Hugs...
