IS YOUR JOB WHAT YOU WISHED WHEN YOU WERE A KID?

Do you remember how everyone used to ask what we wanted to be once we grew up?  It seemed like a constant question that happened all through childhood and even beyond.

As a kid, I carried around band-aids and iodine to heal minor scrapes or cuts for everyone in the neighborhood, so everyone assumed I would become a nurse. (lol)  Then I thought I wanted to be a neurosurgeon, until I realized my hands were a little too shaky to risk operating on someone's brain. There were just too many buzzes every time I played Operation.(lol) Despite having a French teacher who wanted to me follow in her footsteps, it wasn't until late in the 8th grade, that I realized I wanted to become the coolest English Professor in the world.  This would be the perfect vocation to allow me to read books all the time, AND to talk! (lol)

Nope, it didn't happen, but it made me wonder, how many people actually work in the field they thought about as a child?  Some may start in one type of job, then years later, realize their dream.  A few give up.  Many hop from job to job to pay bills, but are unhappy, eventually stepping out in total faith to become writers, entrepreneurs, chefs, musicians, or painters.

What about you?  Are you doing what you expected to do when you were a child?  Do you wish you were doing something else? Do you love what you do now?

  1. Well, i dont have a job atm, but I'm excited to start college this Oct. *fingers crossed*. I always wanted to be a lawyer cause Im good at arguing, but then I saw a mob movie and the lawyer got wacked. So, that changed my career path.LOL. For awhile in highschool I wanted to do something with the EPA but then changed it to Zoology. Neither happened but my new path is going to involve working in healthcare which I never imagined to happen!

  2. When I was a kid I wanted to be a veterinarian. After getting older and realizing that it wasn't all petting cute puppies, I decided that wasn't the job for me. I tried my hand at managing a bakery, laundromat and a deli. I was a front desk receptionist for a large apartment building and was a cashier in a souvenir store as well as a jewelry store. Then I spent a few years writing articles and now I'm retired.

    1. You are so right, Mary! Lots of work goes into working with animals even though we love them so much! I suck at baking so a definite no! (lol) I like jewelry, but don't have the skills to really sell them. Sounds like you've done lots of cool stuff! Hugs...Ro

  3. Hahah! When I was a kid, I wanted to be a bank teller. Imagine having access to all that money! But, alas. I was told I can't have any of those money because they belong to other people. I didn't want to be a bank teller the next day. The weird thing is, i still don't see myself as anything and I'm 41 years old. Sigh.

    1. LOL! Sounds like an interesting job, and hear they don't make much money for handling all that cash. I think you're an awesome writer and reviewer, with a fun sense of humor, so that's your calling. Hugs...Ro

  4. Well, I wanted to sell books but instead, I'm lending them for free, it's even better :) I started working as a secretary but when I found that opportunity to work in a library, I forced my way into it. And now, you'll have to kill me to take my job, lol !

  5. Ehhh. I'm kind of an offshoot of what I'd expected. lol I'd planned on veterinary medicine. We have doctors and nurses in our family but I'm not a people person and am very much about the animals. But vet school was NOT for me. I really don't like people enough to deal with them that much. lol So I do animal rescue instead. So still very animal focused and I can do a number of medical things to them but just wasn't on board anymore with being a full on vet.

    1. Anna, as always you crack me up, but at least you're honest! (lol) Dealing with people and the animals would have been part of the deal, and glad you found a way to sneak in the animal part without the rest. (lol) Kudos to you! Hugs...

  6. When I was a child and all through my teenage years, I wanted to be a teacher! I have always loved reading, and I've also always loved learning more languages, so I wanted to teach English and possibly French.
I somehow ended up in accounting, though, for almost twenty years before I got so sick of it I just couldn't do it anymore. I was really lucky that my husband earned enough for me to quit my job and go back to University to get a BA and MA in English (still not completely finished with my MA) and I got my first long-term substitue teaching job in January this year. I've loved every minute of teaching - even the difficult ones with students talking back!! So I'm really lucky to finally be able to do my dream job at 44.

    2. I don't really see myself as a hero, Ro, but I am very happy to be able to follow my dream right now! And I think it's helped my kids to see that the choices they make now about the future can be changed if they feel the need to do that later on :)

    1. That's the thing about life, right? It gets in the way and we have to make adjustments that we may or may not like. But we still hope that somehow it will make a difference and be worth it. Hugs....and thanks a bunch! Ro

  8. This was a great entry and really hit close to home. Unfortunately, I am not in the field I thought I'd be in but as a child, and like most children, I didn't really know what that was until later on in life. Writing is a nice hobby and a fun pass time but the brunt of my day is spent sitting in front of a computer screen logging data in DOS mode. Yeah, you read that right.
