DO YOU EVER REALLY READ YOUR TBR PILE?

Before I forget, stop by to visit our very good buddy Kim from www.caffeinatedbookreviewer.com .  She always has tons of great info about book reviews, blogging tips, movies and other fun stuff.

PILING IT ON
When I was a lot younger, my TBR pile was very small because I was literally reading all the time.

Yes, I have read all these books! (lol)

Fast forward to 2016, and while I'm always reading, the list of books I still need to read is now astronomical and I can't keep up! To make things worse, I continue to add more novels!  What in the heck is wrong with me?

After reading The Shining, by Stephen King, I made a conscious effort to get every book he's ever written, but I'm way behind.  His books fill up a very large box that I definitely need to read one day, but I don't know if I'll ever get it done. When people are giving out FREE books, I have to have them, and if my favorite author writes a new novel, I'm right there at Barnes and Noble to get a fresh new copy.  Don't even mention the books from the library and thrift stores, or gifted books from friends who aren't readers.  Then there are all these great Book Bloggers out there who provide such fabulous reviews about new authors, that I just have to try. What's a girl to do?

What about you?  Will you ever get to that pile, or will it just sit there, gathering dust?

Every once in a while, I find a program on television that really has me scratching my head in disbelief, and Airport Security: Colombia is one of them. Many people use this airport to get to the US, Mexico, France and Spain.  Let me just say this - if you're thinking about swallowing 20-40 capsules of cocaine, (those drugs have a window of just 30 hours before possibly dissolving & killing someone) stashing cocaine in false bottoms of your suitcase or the heels of your shoe, or trying to travel with a false passport, the Colombian Airport is not the place to do it. They are serious about their work, and will cart you off to jail with a quickness.  They actually stopped an elderly nun because she looked suspicious!

TRUE Story - Many, many years ago, while in the Air Force, I took a military flight from North Dakota to California for vacation. One of the requirements before boarding, was to have the drug dogs check each passenger's luggage.  The dog didn't stop until he reached me and my bags.  OMG!  I've never done drugs in my life, so why is this huge German Shepherd stopping, and all eyes on me?!  The MP's searched me and my bag before realizing that the dog kept going back to a white bag that was sitting beside my luggage.  They finally peeked inside and realized the dog was hungry and wanted my cheeseburger and fries!  "Sorry mam, he's not supposed to alert to food", as he smiled and moved on.

DO YOU TIP WELL?
Google and Zagat, the Restaurant Review site, did a study in January and determined that the city of Boston tips better than any other city, with an average of 20%.  The national average is about 18.9%.  The city that tips the worst would be San Antonio at 17.1%. zagat
Can you imagine visiting the same restaurant over and over, and no one wants to serve you because of how you tip?  That would be the pits for sure!

CELEBRITY TOP TIPPERS
  1. Dan Ackroyd - $100 or 50% of the check - whichever is greater
  2. Rihanna - - $200 on an $82.00 check
  3. Amy Schumer - $1000 tip for a $10 drink
  4. Brad Pitt - $700 tip for a $1,000 meal
  5. Bill Murray(Love his humor!) 120% Tip on $60.00
  6. Drew Cary - $400 Tip on a $250.00 check
  7. David Beckham - $900 Tip on a $100.00 check
  8. Ben Affleck - $90 Tip on a $10.00 check
  9. Johnny Depp - $4000 Tip for staying open early morning
  10. President Obama - 52% Tip on a Grilled Cheese Sandwich
CELEBRITY WORST TIPPERS
Waiters/Waitresses Beware!  If you see these people at your restaurant, run and run quickly in the other direction!  Jeremy Piven, Britney Spears, Rachel Ray (say it isn't so!) Michael Jordan(cheated on his first wife their entire marriage), Tiger Woods (cheated on his wife with a zillion women and they have the texts to prove it), and Usher. Words of wisdom to some of these non-tippers. Waiters and waitresses work hard to serve, and cannot use DVDs, autographed pictures, $ .08 or no tip at all to pay any bills.

  1. Good morning, RO! Yes, I do read my TBR list. I just, this week, finished reading my Christmas books. It take me some time, but I get to them.

  2. I do. I really do. Just not fast enough. Whenever I make an On the Night Table post, those books are read first and foremost. If not, then I put them back on the next post.

    1. Your house is so orderly, I just can't imagine you ever having an out of control pile despite your weekly trips to the bookstore! (lol) When I tell you I'm behind, it's like years and years, girl! (lol) I need to get some tips from you. Hugs...

  3. I read exclusively on a Kindle because I loathe clutter. I usually keep a list of the books I want to feature on my "Best Books" blog each month and those are the only ones I download--each one when I'm ready to read it. The system seems to work.

    1. Once I get the books on a shelf, I literally can't stand for them to be moved out of order, and will cause me to panic. (lol) If they haven't made it to the shelf, they can pile up, and I forget, but I need to pick up some tips from you guys real soon! (lol) Hugs...

  4. I feel your pain, lady. I have a huge TBR pile and wish list. I blame bloggers and my need for the next book in the series, too. And don't get me started on second hand shops and sales. ;)

Haha! We were just talking about cheap tippers yesterday when we went out with family.

Oh my, I would be stressed seeing a drug dog sniffing eagerly at my bags, too. Funny about the food.

    1. I know, right? That list just keeps growing and growing. I feel sorry for waitstaff that is tipped poorly, and I think it happens more than we know. Talk about stressed! That dog was ready to eat my cheeseburger! (lol)

  5. I've books sitting on the shelves for years hoping I would get around to reading them and I'm sure I will, it will just take a bit longer, I'm a slower reader.

plus I think now that book series seems to be the norm, it's kind of worst because now instead of one book to read, you got to read the rest of the series, so...

anyway, happy reading. have a lovely day

  6. WE always tip 20% unless the service is poor. Ha as for my book TBR pile. Hmm, I read 3 and add 10...you do the math!

  8. TBR- I have so many books it'll be a miracle if I get to read them all in ten years time. I need to let go of some of them, donate them to the library, but it's so hard! It's like giving up my baby for adoption

    1. I feel like you do, Braine. Some go back to 1991, and I'm pretty dang sure I won't get to them, but it just seems so hard to let go, knowing that I need to donate them. (lol) Thank goodness my son is 30! Hugs...

  9. TBR: That's why it's best for me not to make a list but just to read whatever attracts my eye and not worry about what's next. Does that make me a magpie reader, attracted by shiny things?

Tips: I always try to be generous with a tip unless the service was bad. I still give my 15%, but I'll calculate it down to the last penny. I was happy to see that lots of classy celebrities tip generously. The ones on the other list -- well, I'm not surprised.

    1. I've been staying away from series for the same reason you mention, but even though I've been swamped with other things, I still keep grabbing books that seem interesting, adding to my already massive pile. (lol) It's not my place to judge people, but I have a really hard time with people who make millions of dollars a year, not wanting to recognize someone who needs to pay bills. They worked to get where they are. Why don't they see that others are trying to do the same? So sad. Hugs...and Happy Monday! RO

  10. Before I was blogging I had a to-read pile that was maybe 10 books long, once I was almost through that pile I bought new books. Now I have a lot of unread books and still add new ones almost every week. I wouldn't know what to do if I actually finish all the books I own and I am a moodreader so I like having options. So I don't think I ever red my whole TBR pile.

I think tipping is less expected here as in the US, but not really sure as I don't go to restaurants as often. We went out for dinner last week and did give the waiter a tip.

    1. That's interesting about tips in other countries, and means I need to do some research on that! Thanks so much!

I think I'm with you, what would I do if I had no TBR pile at all because I finally caught up? That's the question of the day and I love it! Thanks so much for stopping by! Hugs...

  11. I used to be an avid reader... I kept up usually was looking for a book to read... fast forward to this year, I have a small pile of books I need to read and never seem to find time for. It must be that I changed my hobby from reading to blogging... which I still get to read.♡♡♡

  12. I can COMPLETELY relate to this post! I feel like the busier life gets, the higher my TBR tower. The frustrating thing is I REALLY do want to read all of them! One thing I think that contributes to this dilemma, is the internet. Now, you have book recommendations coming at you from all angles lol

Great discussion post! First time here and will be back :)

  13. I'm with you, Ro. I do want to read all my books, but I'm starting to think that might not ever happen. I have gotten a lot worse since I started blogging, too. My physical bookshelves used to be almost empty, as I read almost only e-books. Now, that I've been to two conventions, I have tons and tons of physical shelves.
Also, especially at the beginning of my kindle days, I got so many free books. Plus, I keep getting ARCs. So while I do try, I think I'm going to have to live for a very long time to enjoy all my books.
I've never gotten the tip thing, Ro. In Europe, waiters and waitressess have a real salary, just like everyone else. I don't really understand how you all think it's normal that they don't in the US. Why shouldn't the restaurant owner make sure their employees make a living? If they added the 20% to the price of everything, that could go towards the salary, no? It seems unfair that if I go to a restaurant, I not only have to pay for my food and the preparation, I have to add extra to that in order to pay the person who serves me, too... That's the European in me, though, and I'm a very good tipper when I visit the US! Promise!
    I hope you're having a fantastic week :)

    1. It's amazing how quickly things can pile up, for sure. I'm hearing lots more of how it's done in Europe, and it would make sense to pay the waitresses a true salary for their hard work. Unfortunately, we're no there yet. *heh* Makes me want to vist Greece and France much mire now! I think that would make it so much easier. Kudos to changing it up a little when you're here. (lol) Hope all is well with you in Spain. Hugs...

  14. Mine has grown ridiculously too. I rarely buy anymore until I'm actually ready to read a book. The list is just WAY too long anymore and no where near enough hours in the day. Whew!

    1. Girl, I know exactly what you mean, but I'm glad you've found a way to stop yourself (which is more than I can say about myself-lol) by waiting until you're ready to read it. I know your ARCs have to be out of this world! Hugs...

  15. I'll probably never reach the end of my TBR either. xD Although I can dream right?!?! Last year I actually did though!! I had like 3 books left and it was kind of a SHOCK. I promptly went to the library though to fix that calamity hahaha. Oh dear. At least too many books is better than not enough, right?!?

The concept of tipping is still absolutely confusing to me. 0_0 We don't tip in Australia so I have no idea why people do it. Plus paying 50% more for a meal seems so expensive?! How do people even afford to eat out omg?! :O hehe, different cultures I guess!

Thanks for stopping by @ Paper Fury!

    1. Wow, Cait! That's pretty dang amazing to get through your pile! Kudos to you! I'm a library fanatic, (they all know me by name), and of course that makes for a whole new library pile so the police won't get me for unreturned books! (lol) I'm learning a lot about the differences in other countries versus how it's done in the states, and makes it fascinating. Thanks for stopping by!
