CAN YOU HULA HOOP & DO YOU LOAN OUT YOUR THINGS?

A wooden ring that was selling in retail stores in 1957 by an Australian Company made Richard P. Knerr and Arthur K. Melin of Wham-O in California pay attention.  In 1958, they recreated the ring into a colorful plastic hoop and sold it for $1.98. This is unbelievable, but in just 4 months they sold 25 million of those now classic toys called the Hula Hoop!

The person who kept  the hoop spinning the longest is Aaron Hibbs from Ohio. How long did he actually keep it going?  74 hours and 54 minutes! Now that's some serious aerobic activity.

As a kid, I could rock that hoop on my neck, hips and my ankles with no problem.  Now, I'm totally embarrassed to admit I can't keep it moving for even a full body roll. (lol) In fact, I  checked around with some other friends and not one of them can still Hula Hoop either! (lol)

What about you?  Still have what it takes to keep that ring spinning round and round and round?

Blood Orange Bars

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line an 8x8x2-inch baking pan with foil, extending the foil over the edges of the pan. Grease foil; set aside.
  2. For crust, in a large bowl stir together the 1 cup flour, the 3 tablespoons powdered sugar, and the 1/4 teaspoon salt. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press mixture evenly and firmly into the bottom of the prepared pan. Bake about 15 minutes or until light golden around the edges.
  3. In a medium bowl whisk together the granulated sugar, eggs, orange peel, orange juice, and food coloring (if using) until smooth. Stir in the 2 tablespoons flour and the 1/4 teaspoon salt. Pour orange mixture over the hot crust.
  4. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes or until set. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack. Use foil to lift uncut bars out of pan. Place on a cutting board. Cut into bars. Dust bars with powdered sugar.

DO YOU EVER LOAN BOOKS OR OTHER ITEMS TO FRIENDS OR FAMILY?
When I was younger, I was the go to person for lipstick, socks books and movies.  In most instances, I didn't want to be the bad guy by saying no.  It didn't take long before I was taken advantage of.  Some things came back ruined, but more often than not, I never saw the merchandise again.

No one really understood how important these things were, and I ended up having to re-purchase what I could.  Some items could never be replaced.

I think you already know that I rarely lend anything out these days. (lol)  I'm okay if someone gets mad at me.  That insures my precious book collection stays in order, or I don't have to waste time finding that crazy lipstick color again.  Do you loan your items?

  2. I used to loan things out but then they got broken or never came back and now I don't let anyone borrow things from me. I will give someone something if I have it to spare, at least that way I won't be mad when I never get it back. lol

  3. I could never hula even if my life depends on it! I love blood oranges, didn't know that you can bake with them. I might end up eating the fruit before it makes it to the batter lol. And I don't loan, I give it away. I'm very particular with all of my things, lol

    1. I love blood oranges too, and have a hard time finding them sometimes. I'm with you, and will give an item away rather than loan it. Hugs...

  5. Lol. OMG it's been a long time since I've hooped the hula or hula-hooped. LOL. I'm terrible at it and since the waist has gotten thicker, might've worsened even more now.

    1. Girl, don't even get me started on doing this. I made a total fool of myself, and had the nerve to keep trying. (lol) It was good for a laugh, though.

  8. It always puts you in a tough spot when someone asks to borrow something. I've been burned, too, and I don't have much confidence that something will be returned. As for the hula hoop, what a genius invention. So simple yet so fun. When I worked in an office a few years ago, they had some sort of challenge where everyone hula hooped every day twice a day for exercise. There were hula hoops all over the place!

    1. That Hula Hoop idea sounds like so much fun and a great way to engage with peers. If I could ever master it again, I could start a class, and steal your idea. (lol) Hugs..

  9. I loved hula-hooping when I was a kid, but sadly I tried it last year and couldn't make this body do it. Lost the knack.

Aye yi yi, loaning. Yeah, I used to and then got really particular when it rarely came back at all or in the same condition it left. Now, I only loan things that I will not get mad if they don't come back.

    1. Isn't that amazing, Sophia? We were so good at it as kids, and didn't give it a second thought, but why can't we master it now? Crazy! (lol) No loaning period for me, unless it's a duplicate, and won't matter if it doesn't come back. Hugs...

  10. whenever I see hula hoops, I think of the movie, 'The Hudsucker Proxy,', there is a scene where a hula hoop is found by a boy and everyone started playing with one - quite a fun scene and movie

I don't like to lend things either mostly because people are odd, they take care of their things but when it comes to other people's things, there isn't as much care, at least, in my experience

anyway, just concluded my contest and you are chosen, randomly, using the random number generator. let me know if you want a new banner or a box of chocolate, your choice, send me an email or reply to this comment as I my email turn on, yours isn't so can't email you.

    1. Thanks again for the win! I've seen the Hudsucker Proxy 7 or 8 times, and I still get amazed at it. True, sometimes people do tend to not care about other people's things for sure. Hugs...

  11. I cannot hula hoop - and I'm pretty sure I never could :)! BUT, when I was in college, a girl in one of the dorms was trying to break the world record for hula hooping. She was set up in the lobby and the media was there - I went and watched her for a while. I think she made it 3 days? That recipe looks delicious!
