HAVE YOU EVER BINGED ON A GENRE AND COULDN'T STOP?

The other day I was in a car repair shop and had to use the restroom. I'm sure you can imagine my surprise when right in front of me was a very large grey Pit Bull.   He stared.  I stared, then gulped.  And he continued to stare.
I love animals and wanted to pet this beautiful guy, but instead, I slowly backed away, preferring to leave him in peace. Suddenly, he pounced, and I thought that was it!
Surely my life was over.  Instead of attacking, this adorable guy just wanted to love me with tons of kisses and lots of slobber. (lol) He was so excited that he practically knocked me over.  As for using the bathroom, I waited until the Office Manager came back to take him for a walk.  By the way - his name is Ratchett. (lol)

Anywho.  Years ago, I started reading the Carpathian book series from Catherine Feehan, and became hooked on Vampire Romances. Her novels were dark and so descriptive that often brought tears to my eyes. Then I moved on to JR Ward, whose Brotherhood stories I had originally rejected.  There was actually a period when I went through withdrawal waiting for that next release.
After that, it was  Lara Adrian with Argeneau Series and the humor of Lynsay Sands.  Vampire love was all I thought about - then that binge was over after 3 years or so.
Meanwhile, I collected and read literally hundreds of books that I still treasure, along with a whole lot more.  Ironically, these authors have mastered the art of writing about vampires in very different ways, but they also write about other things.  Some have been successful and others have not when they venture off into other areas.

These days, I still read some love stories, but I'm all about suspense and mystery novels, with some history mixed in.  The Bloggers I hang out with are all about romance novels, and they've found brand new authors who are writing about military love, paranormal, historicals and lots more.  What about you?  Do you only read a certain genre all the time, or do you switch things up a bit? Are you a binge reader? Sometimes I wonder if the author is ready to move on to different things, or have they ever been afraid of losing fans?

MOVIES FOR 2017
If you're an action fan and missed the 1st John Wick, you've got to check that one out, then stay tuned for John Wick - Chapter 2, coming in February.

The Classic movie Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford was released in 1982, and the new version comes out on October 6. Yes, this is one I've got to see!

What about you?  Is there a movie you're looking forward to this year?

  1. Big dogs can sometimes be intimidating but I love animals. I don't mind so much when I'm alone but when I have my mouthy little dog with me, I don't like bigger dogs coming over.

I love Christine Feehan! She's my favorite author. Ya know, I started out reading horror, all manner of horror books. Then my mom gave me a few of her historical romances and I was hooked. I've been mainly reading paranormal romance for a few years because I like it best. So yes, I indulge in just one genre.

    1. I've been finding lately that the really big dogs are so gentle, and the little ones are ready to nip at your heels. (lol) Christine Feehan is an awesome writer and a wonderful woman! I've gotten away from the paranormal lately, but you guys have always told me about some good ones, so I'll find my way back one day. (lol) Hugs...

    1. Mysteries and thrillers are my jam these days, Launna. But I'm still behind with a HUGE TBR pile. Hope to catch up this year and get it whittled down. Hopefully, you can relax a little this year with a real good book soon. This is your year for YOU! Hugs...

  3. We've had a Doberman and a Pit Bull who were both loving family dogs, but yes, they had a scary rep and with some it's earned. Caution is a good idea with an unknown dog as far as I'm concerned.

I don't do much binge reading these days with one author or series, but that used to be the only way I read. I'd find an author; read all their books. Find another author; read all theirs. Etc. But now, my form of binging is that I do tend to read a ton of romance, but I vary it up with it's sub categories. That said, I have quite a few mystery and historical fictions that I pick up each year, too.

I'm not really anticipating a movie release this year though I do want to see Wonder Woman. Oh, and I plan to see the Star Wars that released in December this weekend.

    1. Wow! A Doberman and Pit? Wish I could have seen some pics of such beautiful animals. True, better to be safe than sorry, right? (lol)I've done that and spent a ton of money. I'd find an author I loved, then had to have every book in his or her library. There are still a few authors I do that with, but It's not nearly as bad as it used to be, thank goodness. Let us know about Star Wars! Hugs...

  4. A couple years ago I went on a non fiction binge and really amped up my knowledge of history. I wish I had loved it when I was in school. Now I tend to skip around with genres. I don't like to be in a position where I have to wait for the next book. Now I'm super behind.

    1. If you're gonna binge, nothing's better than doing it with non-fiction books, right?! Ditto on the school history thing. (lol) I've been in that position where I went through withdrawal as I waited for that next book, too. YIKES! I'm so thrilled that you stopped by Kenya and Happy New Year! Hugs...

  5. Ha! Totally. I am now in the process of finding The Carpathian series at the thrifshops all over the city, so yeah. A binge reading is in the horizon.

  6. I'm SO grateful for my blogging friends because they introduce me to all kinds of genres I might not otherwise read. I have to read children's fiction to inform my own novel writing, of course, but being able to read grown-up books by so many great authors is a privilege!

    1. I've found out about tons and tons of new to me authors from Bloggers, which I love. I'd be totally lost otherwise. Occasionally, it's fun to peep in the Children's area for some really cool books, and finding out about them from your site is great, too. Some are so perfect for my granddaughter. Hugs...

  7. When I first started reading historical romance I did an epic binge. I don't think I read anything else for about a year! I haven't read any vampire romances but I've been wanting to read J.R. Ward for awhile. That's funny about the pit bull. I don't think it's bad to be wary of a strange dog - especially one with no outward signs of friendliness but I am glad it ended well. Sounds like Ratchett is a total sweetie!

    1. Hey Kathy! The things that can happen to me on a daily basis can sometimes remind you of I Love Lucy. (lol) I just hate that I don't have the skill set to actually write about it all. When I was a kid, I had boxes and boxes of historical romances. It was crazy, so I can totally relate. You'll love JR Ward's series. Hugs...

  8. It's a good idea to be cautious of a dog who isn't familiar with you. Even teeny, weeny, toy poodles (smile!).

    1. LOL! You're right Angela. Some poodles and Chihuahuas have been known to be quite vicious in certain situations. When I was about 10, a Chihuahua got out of a neighbor's house and bit the back of my leg as I walked home from school. YIKES! That sure was no fun. I'm glad it worked out so well with such a huge dog who had no clue who I was. Hugs...

  9. I read any genres as long it's not horror and doesn't involve anything too gross or gruesome; but lately, I seem to be reading a lot of fairytales or re-told fairytales

I saw the first John Wick and it was violent but strangely enjoyable plus I recognized new york landmarks, actual places that I've been so that was kind of fun, probably will see the second movie but who knows

I don't really have any upcoming movie I want to see but perhaps the new live-action of Beauty and the beast, not quite liking the idea of Emma Watson being beauty plus there seems to be singing involved, so don't know

    have a lovely day.

    1. No horror movies or books for me either Lissa. I saw John Wick, and yes, it sure was violent, but fun, right? (lol) That's pretty neat about the fairytale stories. I would think you would get a different aspect from when you were a kid. Hugs...

  10. Haha I had a similar experience in a Florida restroom but instead of a dog it was a lizard... Still scared me though ;)
U never got much into the vampire themes but I used to hardcore binge read dystopian novels (but I think pretty much everyone was at the time haha)
I've noticed a lot of people into Jack the Ripper retellings. I recently read Stalking Jack the Ripper and it was interesting (and very gory)

    1. My goodness, I think I may have passed out seeing a giant lizard in a bathroom, but I've heard that they are popular in Florida. I used to be into scary movies as a kid, but the gory stuff I stay away from in books and movies these days. I bet the Jack the Ripper story was interesting though. Hugs, and thank you so much for stopping by to say hello!

  11. I use to go to library and get books in a series and read them back to back until done..but I burned out and quickly realized I didn't appreciate them as much. Now I wait at least 3 weeks between books before picking up the next!

    1. That's probably a good rule of thumb - to give ourselves some time between books to regroup and save our sanity, right? (lol) Hugs...

  12. I love animals, but ever since I was a kid I have been afraid of dogs. I think it's because their sometimes enthusiastic greetings and my mom being afraid of dogs as well. I still hope one day to get over that fear as I do think they are great animals.

I read almost all genres or am at least willing to give them a try. I read a lot of romance in all it's genres, but also like a good mystery, although I prefer cozy mysteries usually as I don 't like too much gore. i also like fantasy and sci-fi. I sometimes have binges on one genres, but it actually happens rarely I read a lot of the same genre in a row. usually it's more that I suddenly read more of a specific genre over a longer time.

    1. I was bitten once, but I still love dogs, but have to admit that I'm more partial to cats because they don't have to be walked. (lol) I think it helps when you read all types of books so you can minimize the binging. I don't like a lot of gore either in a novel, and don't normally read sci-fi. I will watch it on television or on a movie. Hugs...

  13. I found your blog through Caffeinated Reader. I don't read vampire stories, but I do relate to your post. I used to only read mysteries, suspense, and thrillers, that's it. Then I became a book blogger and was introduced to so many genres, so many good titles, that I started venturing out of my comfort zone. I razed my first blog and made a new one, and decided to call myself eclectic.

I am not afraid to try new genres or authors (if it's a requested book or library book) because the worst that can happen is a loss of a few hours or a DNF. I binge-read authors, though, and shouldn't do that because it gives me temporary burn-out towards them but sometimes it can't be helped :)

They've told me about so many new books that I never would have known about. There are still a few authors I binge read, but it's definitely not as bad as it used to be. Eclectic people and books are very cool! Hugs...
